Flattery leads you nowhere
Sycophancy is not the art of real growth
There are several ways to progress in our lives being it social or professional but flattery is certainly not the right way to do it. Only time honored hard, honest and sincere work is the right choice to go up the ladder in most cases and the one who choose to do it through wrong means certainly would bite the dust sooner or later. No boss is going to like any thing better than a punctual, responsible and hardworking employee does for his organization than some one looking too sweet but doing nothing at all.
In fact, flattering is limited to a particular boss only but hard and true work is appreciated by one and all and has no substitute for the same. If a sycophant finds himself in a tough situation then only does he realizes the value of hard work or ‘works hardy’, flattery does not come forward to save him in such cases. One needs to work hard and according to need to impress his bosses rather than being a sycophant to please a particular boss, which in my view is not sufficient to impress the whole team.
Complete your work on time
There is no shortcut to success apart from hard work and planned schedule. If you cannot complete your work according to demand of the project and plan it as per the required schedule of advance planning, you are not going to impress your bosses. One has to be very careful to keep updated and up to the mark to be a successful worker who deserves all the appreciations from his seniors. They might not say so on your face but while the time comes, you shall find yourself right on top of the promotion list.
Being hones is must
In case of failure of , that is part of the game so no big deal, be hones and tell it to your seniors so that a way could be found out to make things right. Hiding it and finding ways to save you would only complicate the situation further beyond repair. The honesty in such cases only reveals your character. Never try to hide the facts because once you begin compromising with your true thoughts than you are no more trustworthy for any one because that gaming with the system is bound to show its colors sooner than later.
You must look liking working
I know some people like to work but do not want to show themselves off. However, this is important that your work should reach to your boss because there are some smart workers around in every organization who are looking for taking credit for others work. Therefore, this is necessary that you should work tactfully and discuss your work with your boss from time to time to control the situation well and keep reins in your own hands. Be careful to not to look over-smart and too assertive while handling the boss, that should be done smoothly.
You should respect your boss but with self respect in mind
I have seen some smart workers who happened to be ‘yes men’ there is no harm doing it up to a limit but not at the cost of your own respect. If you choose to be a yes man even if the point in question is totally wrong or harmful for your project make it clear. Put forward your own viewpoint that should help in making your image better and self-respect grow. I also know that some bosses like and get impressed by flattery. In such cases he might take you for granted, give him respect but never compromise with your own principles.
Do not shirk from responsibility
I know some good workers remain overloaded with work because they know how to deal with it but this becomes a little hard while you reach to your work place and another assignment is waiting for you. Now what would you do! A refusal is not the solution but a minus point for an efficient worker. This could be another trial for your efficiency. The good workers are always under the scanner and tested different ways therefore this is wise to discuss with your boss before accepting the new assignment explaining him in detail about your ongoing project and work schedule already in hand. Talk about time frame before giving a nod in affirmative. That certainly would bring you in good books o your boss.
Do not wait for things to happen move them your own way
There are times when a colleague must go on emergency leave, move forward and offer your services to share the workload of project before the boss finds some one to do the job. That would certainly give you a few extra points and your managerial skills would be highlighted to make it a big plus in the eyes of your superiors. This only shows your abilities to handle the situations and coming good at crucial junctures in adverse conditions, even your coworkers would find it motivating and helpful.
You should be little extra active
How would you like to help your superiors or colleagues while you have no particular project in hand and can spare time to support your coworkers? In fact, this habit can do wonders for you because the habit of helping others is a rare gesture and this stands you out of the crowd. People who really matter may notice it sooner or later and their lies your chance to go up the ladder. There is no harm helping others out of their workload if you can afford to do that.
Go beyond the rules
Sounds strange, yes it does! However, this is not as strange as it sounds. Most people think that going beyond the rules is not done, true in most cases this is not good to go against set rules but if you have some nice solutions to solve certain problems there is no harm applying them. At the most, you can discuss about such applications with your superiors before applying them. In some cases, these may look like a risky game but if it works, you have a bright future waiting for you.
Now back to Flattery
- I recently was on a public forum where members were discussing sycophancy a way of going to next level in different fields of life. I have my own way of thinking on this subject, please read them as I have tried to raise a few points here-
- You can find it a way of going up only in case if your boss finds your work satisfactory, no boss can afford to have an employee at the cost of loosing targets and imperfect work.
- You must understand your responsibilities yourself; no boss likes to repeat them occasionally unless you want to make him feel bad. Sycophancy works up to a limit only.
- You should accept your shortcomings humbly no matter those are big or small. You cannot hide them with the help of false excuses.
- One should avoid criticism, bad comments and dirty politics because such things only divert you from your chosen path up to a great extent and make you forget your performance.
- You cannot help it but to keep yourself up to date and understanding things well while with your coworkers, misunderstandings only reduce your capacities of a good worker, Cooperation not only improves yours but the performance of the whole organization.
