Where is Bujumbura?

Bujumbura, which is formerly called as the Usumbura,is a city in western Burundi. Bujumbura is the capital of the Burundi and of Bujumbura Province,and it is located  at the northeastern end of famous Lake called as Tanganyika.The image belows shows the view of Bujumbura

Transportation

Bujumbura is extensively a trade and communications center, and it also consist a ferry service to Kigoma, Tanzania, from which there are direct raillinks to Dar es Salaam.11 km nortwet of Bujumbura is the international airport of Bujumbura, and it is shown in the image below.

Occupation

This  city is mainly located in a cotton-growing region, and apart from this lake fishing is considred asan important occupation.There are different plants set up for the  processing of cotton, fish, and coffee.There are a number of factories that  produce beer, cement, and pharmaceuticals.The famous University of Burundi , which was founded in 1960, is locted here, and it is shown in the image below

Its history

It was in 1871,the explorers namely David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley visited Usumbura and this settlement naturally became an important army camp in German East Africa.It was in 1923 , Usumbura became the capital of the Belgian mandate, which later become the trust territory in 1946, of Ruanda-Urundi.

Violence

When thy got independance in 1962, the city’s name was changed to Bujumbura Lots of violence occured in this city and mainly ethnic violence between Tutsi and Hutu groups  erupted in 1962, 1972, 1988, and 1991.In 1993 when the coup attempt was made Burundian president Melchior Ndadaye(the image shown below) was killed and it again resulted in Hutu-Tutsi violence .

This led Thousands of Hutu to flee the capital, and it became a stronghold for the Tutsi-dominated army. This violence continued till 1996, and repeated clashes and it also caused many deaths in and around Bujumbura.
