Is our world going to end? This seems to be a million dollar question presently. And answering this question might not be that easy, but we have people all over the world trying to tell us in great detail how our world is going to end. We have hundreds of philosophers, god men and scientists who feel the apocalypse is near and they have more ways to support this fact than you can imagine. This article gives an insight hopefully a thorough one into the various aspects of this disaster and the vast number of explanations and rumours revolving about this year 2012.

We have been hearing about this “end of the world” talk from a couple years but this gathered a lot of momentum since the last few months. No one knows whether 2012is really our year of doom but this doesn’t stop our energetic entrepreneurs to take advantage of this topic and create hype and improve their ratings and their balances. Since the last few months the world has seen this hype grow into a million dollar grosser which is helping many never before noticed channels to have the share of TRP ratings. We also can’t forget what a massive hit the movie 2012 was which, though was of high technical standards, bases its success completely on this hype. This hype now seems to cross its limits and is starting to make us feel that there is nothing there actually but hype.

The idea of our earth ending in 2012 actually originates from the Mayan calendar which predicts that our earth is going to end in the last part of this dreaded year. Mayans, who belonged to mankind’s earliest civilization know to us were expert warriors and also had a lot of analytical capability. They are credited for inventing the first calendar and also many other inventions. They could calculate the length of the lunar month with an accuracy of 4 days, which is an amazing thing seeing the fact that it took modern science many more centuries to accomplish the same task. They are also known for their problem solving methodology and their strategic approach in war. It wouldn’t be difficult for people who are capable of doing this much to predict when the world will end but we can never say whether they were really correct or not.

The concept of doomsday gathered much momentum when explanations started pouring out from various scientists which made a large chunk of people who were actually non-believers of the rumour to re-establish their stand on the issue. The most important explanation given by scientist for this disaster is the cyclic nature of the intensity of sun’s radiation. The sun’s radiation contains particles called neutrinos which carry a high amount of energy. Scientists fear that the maximum intensity of sun’s radiation would be given out in 2012 which results in the ejection of an enormous number of neutrinos which might burn down everything on our planet. They also postulate that this was what happened to the dinosaurs centuries ago.

Another very famous explanation revolves around the Yellow Stone National Park in USA. This park is the house to one of the world’s largest volcanoes ever. Experiments show that the pressure inside the volcano had been increasing rapidly since many years. Extensive calculations reveal that this pressure might become destructive leading to the eruption of this volcano in 2012. How much area can be affected by this volcano is a question of much debate.

Yet another explanation relates this issue to the earth’s magnetic field. The earth’s magnetic field is known to change its direction over the centuries. It has been recorded through observations that it has done many times till now. Till is also known that the earth’s magnetic field plays a key role in deflecting a particular frequency and phase of ultra violet light coming from the sun. It is estimated that the earth’s magnetic field would change by the year 2012 and this in turn would lead to the UV rays falling on the earth destroying everything on the face of the earth.

Asteroids have been all time favourites in the world of fiction. The plots in which a huge asteroid crashes in to the earth are not quite new. Do it is not so surprising that they entered this discussion as well. There had been many rumours that NASA has discovered an asteroid twenty times the size our planet heading straight at us and would crash into us in 2012. Though NASA disclaimed these rumours we never know what lies awaiting us.

Last but not the least we have the ancient Indian scriptures- the Vedas . The greatness of these amazing works has been accepted all over the world and we now have scientists referring to these books trying to decipher the writings hoping to find the solutions to many of our problems. The Vedas recorded the speed of light to a degree of accuracy of 7 decimal points which leaves even the most non believer of these scripts amazed as measuring the speed of light had been one of the most challenging tasks for our scientist and it took them many centuries to find the answer to this. The Vedas depict the end of this world as the end of ”Kaliyuga” and entry of this planet into “Swarna Yuga”. In this process only enlightened people would survive and the rest would perish.

Whatever anyone says we have no way of finding out whether all this is true or not. The Bible explains I great detail about the deluge and the ark that Noah built which carried two animals of every species. But this story collapses as we can prove using elementary mathematics and geology that such a deluge wouldn’t be possible nor would the building of such an ark when the principle of ship building was in its primitive stage. Though there are many people saying many things all we can do is to wait for this dreaded year and watch for ourselves.
