Are Bats Really Blind?
Bats are not blind. Like many animals, they are born blind, but gain eyesight from the
time they are seven to nine days old.
Bats are night creatures. Most come out only at night to hunt. Although they
can see reasonably well, they have no special eyesight possessed by other night
creatures like the cats and owls. Instead, bats fly in the dark by means of a system.
When the bat flies, it emits a high, squeaking sound, unable to be heard by human
ears. As the sound travels, it hits objects and bounces back. These sound waves tell
the bat where objects are so they can be avoided. This method of locating of objects
is called echolocation. Bats fly safely at night by using their ears, not their eyes.
When the bat darts about in the dark it might appear to be flying around blindly. Actually,
it is hunting insects, which we cannot see in the dark.

What is the world’s largest flower?
The world’s largest flower may look attractive but beware of going too close-for it is
also one of the most evil –smelling! Found in the jungles of south-east Asia, the rafflesia
bloom is also known, rather horribly, as the stinking corpse lily. The rafflesia is unique
in that it has no leaves or stem; it lives as one huge, parasitic flower on the exposed roots
of other plants, particularly the cissus vine, and sucks its nourishment directly from its
host. The flower, which has thick, motded orange-brown and white petals, often reaches
a diameter of about one meter and can weigh as much as 7 kg. The central open nectar is
capable of holding seven liters of liquid. The effect of the smell (like that of rotting flesh)
is to attract flies that collect pollen and bring about fertilization.
