Our environment

When we talk of environment, we are actually speaking of our surroundings. These surroundings are different from place to place. It is also related to the organisms. Hence we can say that the surroundings of an organism are its environment.

 Now you may live Delhi or go to Shimla. You can observe, that your surroundins change, so does your environment.

 Environment can be categorized in various ways. We can break up our environment.

  1. a) Environment
  1. b) Natural-social
  1. Physical (a biotic)–biological(biotic)

Autotrophs and heterophs are linked together by a simple relationship called the `food-chain.’ A simple food chain is as follows:

Plant (autotrophy)

Deer (hervivore)

Lion (carnivore)

In nature, both autotrophs and heterophs depend on each other and co-exist to maintain balance.

Man is also a part of natural environment but he is different from other animals since he can think and affect the environment by his activities.

Man’s needs go beyond food, clothing and shelter. He also needs family and friends. Social environment is just as important for him. We interact constantly with other people in the neighborhood and friends. We meet with our relatives and orgainse social.

What are the things that help us to build a healthy social environment.

  • Orgaising social events such birthday, marriages, house warming ceremonies where friends’ relativs get together and enjoying together.
  • Development of parks, recreational and sports clubs.
  • Celebration of religious and national festivals to inculcate cultural patriotic fervor cultural and patriotic fervor.

Can you think of certain action activities and attitudes which affect our social e environment in a negative way?

Disrespect for rules and norms of the society, not caring for public property, cheating and stealing are some of the things that spoil our social environment and are, therefore, not desirable.

  • Marriage ceremonies are occasions for get together and help in knowing our culture.
  • Celebration of religious festivals makes cultural bonds stronger.
