Land and water

The earth is the home of us all. It is made up of land and water. More than two-third of the earth is covered with water. The rest of it is land. The earth has an envelope of air around it. It is called atmosphere. All living things need land, water and air. A model of the earth is called a globe.

Land is not the every there. It is low and level at some places and high at other places. Low and level land is called a plain.

Plain land

Most of the houses, factories and roads are built on the plains. The farmers grow many types of crops on the plains. The rivers in the plains are broad and move slowly. Most of the people live in the plains. The plains are very useful.

Hill plays- valley

The low land between two mountains or hills called a valley. Rivers flow through most valleys. The river valleys are very fertile.

Mountains

Very high areas with steep slopes are called mountains. Low mountains are called hills. The upper parts of the high mountains are covered with snow. The lower parts are covered with forests. Many rivers rise in the mountains. These rivers move very fast. Sometimes, they make waterfalls.

Tableland

Level land, which is high, is called a plateau. A plateau is also called a tableland.

Only a few people live in the mountains area. There the towns are small. In the hills, the weather is cool even in summer. So, the people from the plains go to the hill stations in the summer months, for cool enjoying there by happy.

The water around us

A large part of the earth is covered with water. Water is founded in rivers, lakes, ponds, wells, springs and sea.

Many rivers start from snow – covered mountains. Many small rivers join together to form a big river. Sometimes, the rivers make waterfalls. Most of the rivers finally join the sea; some of them flow into lakes too.

Rain is an important source of water. Rainwater gets collected into ponds of tanks. A very large pond is called a lake. Dams can be built across rivers are used for boating and fishing. Seas are very large areas of water. Big seas are called oceans. Sea water is not fit drinking and any other uses. It is salty in taste. Ships sail across the seas and oceans. .

Well are deep holes dug into the earth? We get the underground water through the wells.

Water is needed for growing crops. Animals and plants need water t live and grow. No life is possible without water.
