The misuse of water

Here is an incident on how the residents of the Plachimada village it is belong to Palakakad District in Kerala state, south India. There was saved their water resource from misuse.

The Coca Cola Company was dewing millions of liters of underground water to manufacture soft drinks. Over a period of time, people fond that the water level in the reservoirs and wells had gone down. They did not have enough water for their daily use as it was being taken away by the factory. So the people of this village protested. The Cram Panchyat took an active part in the protest. People protested in front of the factory and forced it to close down. The matter went to court which ruled in favor of the villagers.

On 24 March 1989, about 30 million gallons of crude oil spilled into the sea near Alaska. This is known as the Exxon Valdez oil spill. It is one of the world’s worst environmental disasters. This oil spill killed thousands of sea creatures.

Clean drinking water

We can adopt these simple steps to make sure that the water we drink clean.

• Keep the drinking water covered.

• Do not keep drinking water stored for a long time. Use the stale water to water the plants

• Do not let your fingers touch the water meant for drinking. Always use a long –handled vessel to take out water.

Diseases attack from the drinking of polluted water

a) Human activities like washing clothes, bathing, throwing household waste, immersing clay idols, dumping untreated sewage and oil spills from oil tankers pollute the water bodies.

b) Diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysentery and diarrhea result from drinking polluted water.

c) Clean drinking water is called potable water.

d) We boil water, put chlorine be tablets in it or use a water purifier to clean drinking water at home.
