Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light -Vera Nazarian

The best habit a parent can cultivate in his child is reading. As a matter of course, it leads the kid to other numerous good habits. I opine that, when a child starts reading on her own, the books she chooses play a great role in sustaining her interest in reading. So its vital, for any parent who wishes to make  children love books, choose wisely. Here I wish to suggest 5 best books(according to me,of course), to start with, for a beginner in English literature.

  • The Wizard Of Oz by L.Frank Baum

this is one of the wonderful books , which will punch up the kid's  imagination. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy .after being swept away from her home by a terrific cyclone, she reaches the magical land of Oz. she encounters many interesting characters on her way,lot many fascinating things happens to her as she tries to find her way back home. the story takes the reader to a world of wonders. as it usually happens with the books for children, most of the main characters in the novel ,like hay-man,tin-man,a coward lion - are not human beings, which adds to the curiosity of kids.

  • Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

The handsome, coal-black horse called ''Black Beauty'', is lead through numerous adventures by various owners - from a riding and carriage horse, to the rough life of a town cab horse, to eventual happiness in a secure home, he keeps his strength and good temper. Influential as animal-rights propaganda, this tale is also an extremely exciting and moving children's story. As the the book is narrated with the horse himself as the first person, this book magically seeds an empathy towards other fellow creatures in kid's mind . it teaches him to treat animals with affection and kindness.

  • Mobi-dick by Herman Melville

Mobi-dick means the whale. It is considered to be one of the classic books and a treasure of world literature. The story tells the adventures of a sailor Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pecoud, commanded by one-legged Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab has one purpose on this voyage: to seek out Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale, who destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg, which now drives Ahab to take revenge. The characters featured in this novel are very much versatile in their culture, class and dynamism, that it gives an interesting experience of knowing how varied are people in this world of good and evil.

  • The call of the Wild by Jack London

The story takes place in Alaska,in a time period ,when strong sled dogs were in high demand. A dog named Buck is the central character, who at the beginning of the story is domesticated.Later,he is snatched from a ranch in California and sold into the brutal life of an Alaskan sled dog. Buck is forced to adjust and survive the cruel treatment, fight to dominate other dogs, and survive in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relies on primordial instincts and the lessons he has learned, to become a leader in the wild.

  • Fantastic Mr.Fox by Roald Dahl

The story is about the clever and tricky Mr Fox and how he outwits his cruel and dim-witted farmer neighbors to steal their food from right under their noses. Although the idea of the main character stealing food is not at all a good thing ,particularly for little children, to read, its highly entertaining as children likes to play tricks to win what they need . And in this book, Mr.Fox does that stylishly.

All the above stories had been portrayed into movies and plays ,that too in different versions. It is advisable to allow the children watch the movies after they have read the story since the idea is not to tell them the story ,but urging them to read more and more, anyway. Hope it helps.Enjoy and happy reading.
