The time to work seriously
The newly elected government of India is now six months old and now everyone is expecting a positive result eagerly. The party that was in power for a long time, Congress has already branded it as a ‘U Turn Government’ by publishing a booklet to this effect and Rahul Gandhi already sat on a Dharna (Token of disagreement) protesting against the method of present government’s working ability. On the other hand the government lead by Prime Minister Modi claims to have achieved a lot during this short period. I agree we have not seen many changes on ground level but you will have to accept that we can see changes in the air. However, if the people of this country are expecting changes on fast track they’re not expecting too much since they haven’t seen many changes in last decades and they have sent this government in expecting to see a lot and see it at a fast pace.
I must say BJP is lucky in the sense ever since this government has taken over the oil prices in international market are going down constantly down besides the party is winning constantly in all the states it’s contested so far and expecting to win the remaining where the polling is either going on or to be held shortly. But there is another angle of the story that every win increases the level of expectation and the government will have to prove its worth on a fast rate.
The Prime Minister
There is no doubt our Prime Minister Modi has a reputation that is bigger than combined reputation of all the party members and the younger generation of this country has trusted him for his bigger than life appeal and his reputation of a hard worker. The younger generation has entrusted him with the key of power hoping to get employment. I agree it’s not easy to provide jobs within such a short duration but the way Modi is working and reputation of India is getting better all over the world, the investment started pouring in it gives us hopes. But you know there is a local saying I will translate it though that says ‘what use is the season of marriages if I’m still bachelor’ makes people think if their happiness will last long if they have no ration in their homes. In fact, every family is looking at the proceedings expectantly so their sons get jobs, daughters settled happily and they spend their life as promised while campaigning for elections. And they are not wrong if they have such small expectations from the newly elected government that came into power without the help of crutches to depend on others.
Opportunities for employment
Our best bet for better employment opportunities come from the manufacturing sector and when Modi announce his scheme “Make in India’ that raised hopes but then there was a big hurdle to make this dream true the electricity and that too at cheaper rates. In addition, Modi has promised every household of this country to provide with regular power supply within next five years and although he is trying his best to increase the power generation but and that is big But at this point as not much has been done so far on this particular front. We all know Australia has already signed a deal to provide Uranium to India for peaceful purpose but that is long process of producing electricity. As far coal and gas based power production is concerned we are too far behind on that front too. I was expecting to see development in power production on this front but cancellation of coal blocks by the Supreme Court has sent us on back-foot in this field for the time being.
Right now we can count on one particular field the improvement in industrial reforms that can bring foreign investors and our government is doing enough efforts in this field by improving infrastructure by reducing red-tapism at all levels the basic necessity to attract foreign investors. However, our government has not enough strength in upper house to get necessary support in clearing the bills related to border issues with Bangladesh and service tax. Actually these are national level subjects that need to be handled on consensus of all national level parties to be on the safer side. I feel our governments should give enough importance to the opposition parties in such matters. But the way opposition is behaving the chances of their cooperation with the government to settle the issues look a distant possibility
Let’s be fair
I think opposition is doing the same what the present government had been doing while in opposition themselves on Bangladesh and insurance related bills. Maybe the actions of opposition depend based on their sitting positions in the house the job of opposition is always the same oppose the government. But there are certain other facts that prompt opposition to go against all actions of government first, to oppose the government and make their lives horrible and the other one being the lack of knowledge the later one is less likely though as almost all the members know the real value of all the actions going on in the house and their importance. The opposition never tires saying, ‘we started this or we wanted to do the same’ and still opposes the same issues.
Alternate options and consequences
There was a time when parties knew who will remain in power and who will be sitting in opposition and not only that the opposition also knew they will never come into power so they did not mind opposing all policies of ruling government. But I feel the time has taken a full circle and no government take it for granted to remain in power forever. Let’s presume the thinking of parties will change accordingly but as of now the party that was in power until recently is getting it hard to digest that they’re no more in power and trying their best to oppose the present government on every possible front despite the fact that they haven’t even managed to get required number of seats to claim the post of leader of opposition and that’s one of the biggest reasons they are finding it hard to come to terms. They’re in no mood to cooperate with present government in upper house where the government is in minority and making their best efforts to cause them feel awkward in lower house. The Modi government has the option to call a joint session of the house but it will only cause more sour relations and bills will get further delayed.
The plus points of the present government
There is no doubt the Modi government has done wonderfully well on the front of foreign policies. The worst of Modi’s critic will agree (even if not openly) that Modi has managed to improve the relations with Australia, Japan, America and several other neighboring countries including Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh and China up to some extent. The improvement in relations with all these countries will certainly prove fruitful bringing lot of foreign investment, business and employment and let’s hope electricity from Nepal and Bhutan which is one of the most needed commodities as far development of the country is concerned. However, if the public is happy in general some of us are not satisfied with the overall rate of growth in the country that was expected of this government.
The fact that people from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and from Kolkata to Mumbai are looking for increased opportunities in all sectors. They want development and employment and want government to provide jobs immediately. Everyone knows government is on right track doing its best in all sectors but the main problem is that it is not the problem of people of this country as they want to see a magical wand in the hands of Modi that will solve the employment problem overnight. We all know certain promises made during election campaigns are not hundred percent possible in a fixed time frame but take time according to their size. For instance, the promise to build a fixed length of roads on daily basis will be achieved but only when the necessary planning is complete but that is none of the headache of public they want roads and want it immediately. Such matters bring hopelessness in the mind of public.
Expectations and hopes
Six months cannot be considered enough time for a new government but this government has lot on stake as this government is not an ordinary government. We should not compare any two governments as all governments have their own working styles and ideas to handle things. But if have to compare this government with any previous governments then we shall have to go back to Indira Gandhi’s time in 1971 or maybe Morarji Bhai’s government or let’s compare the present government with Rajiv Gandhi the youth icon of 1984. But you all will agree with me that all these three governments did not stay on top for more than 2-3 years and then their graphs came down. Let me hope this will not happen with Modi’s present government as he has done his homework keeping all these possibilities in his mind.
There is another difference in all previous governments and the present one that probably this government has received a tremendous support of younger voters and the specialty of the younger lot is their listlessness. The younger generation wants instant results or they act ruthlessly rejecting each and everything that is not coming up to their expectations instantly. The younger generation has no patience like older generations had and is ready for the changes and taking the risks. We should not forget people of this country have had enough false promises by opportunists in the name of religion, secularism and development. The time has come the government delivers what they promised to the people of this country.
Conclusion
The new generation is in no mood to wait any more. The new generation wants action the time has gone when the politicians treated the people of this country like animals with carrots tied in their necks as bait and moving forward hoping they will eat it one day.
