As much as cricket was loved, the game gave its fans their biggest shock when some of the biggest names of the game were caught in the act of fixing matches. The impact was the greatest in the Indian subcontinent when its then captain Mohammed Azharruddin, Manoj Prabhakar and Ajay jadeja were accused of match fixing.  The game had lost many of its fans after the scandal. Clearly the largest fan base for cricket in the world hails from India. More importantly the game had lost its credibility and people started doubting the honesty of the game. The Indian cricket team had lost a few big names to the scandal. Suddenly the Indian team looked to be as powerless as it had been powerful. It was at this juncture that Saurav Ganguly was asked to step in as Captain by the BCCI. A great amount of the credit must go to Saurav Ganguly for having taking up the captaincy at a tough time. He infact relinquished the responsibilities thrust upon him. Credit must be given to this man who restored Indian cricket and thereby helping the game itself . He is the most successful test captain for India and this came against the toughest oppositions and with a team that was looking for replacements to its big names, lost to the match fixing scandal. The dirtiest enemy of the game, match fixing, shook Indian cricket to its very foundation and thankfully Ganguly, being the great personality that he is, saved a few blushes for the game in the subcontinent.
