Jaisalmer Fort/Sonar Quila

Also known as the 'Golden Fort', the Sonar Quila is a magnificent fort and is one of the biggest in the world. Built in yellow sandstone, this fort is a true example of fusion of Rajput and Islamic styles of architecture. The fort is a home to many Hindu and Jain temples and old havelis belonging to rich merchants. A large part of old Jaisalmer still comes under the vicinity of Jaisalmer Fort. 

Salim ji ki Haveli/Nathmal ji ki Haveli/Patwon-ki-Haveli

One of the most famous havelis of Jaisalmer is 'Salim ji ki Haveli' which is situated near the Sonar Quila and is built of yellow sandstone. Built around 300 years back and comprising of 38 balconies all with distinct designs, roof carved out in the form of peacock and front facet resembling a ship stern, the haveli is also commonly known as 'Jahaz Mahal' by the locals.

Royal grandeur of Nathmal Ji ki Haveli, built in Islamic and Rajput styles of architecture, makes it one of the best havelis in Jaisalmer. Two huge statues of elephants carved out of yellow sandstone at the entrance seem to be guarding the haveli. Carvings of animals, flowers and modern amenities like cars and fans make the walls and pillars look exceptionally beautiful. Situated in the heart of the Jaisalmer city near the railway station, this haveli is a must visit when you are in Jaisalmer.

A cluster of five small havelis, the Patwon ki Haveli is the first one to be built in Jaisalmer. Also, it is the largest haveli in Jaisalmer. Built in yellow sandstone and exquisitely carved paitings and mirror work on the walls and gateways make this haveli look mesmerizing. The haveli now houses the office of 'Archaeological Survey of India' and the 'Department of State Art & Craft'.

Folklore Museum

One of the most famous museums in Rajasthan is the Folklore Museum located in Jaisalmer. If you are history buff then a visit to this museum is a must. The Folklore museum gives you an insight into the history of Jaisalmer. You will be amazed to see the collection of costumes, weaponry, manuscripts, ancient coins and various other artifacts belonging to the bygone era. The sunset nearby the museum in the backdrop of hills is spectacular and a treat to eyes.
