Secularism implies that religion should not enter public life, professional and official duties. The state should be indifferent to religion and justice be done to all without any discrimination on basis of religion. Thus, the activity of politicians going to temple before election only for attracting voter sentiment is gross violation of secularism and results from faulty understanding of the term.[/quote]

I don't agree to this.Secularism implies that there should not be any discrimination based on religion.Politicians may or may not go to temple or mosque at any time.It is the duty and responsibility of the citizen to understand these tricks.

Secularism definitely implies separation of religion from state. In personal capacity, a politician may perform any worship. But displaying this to people for any purpose is against secularism. Secularism is contrasted to theocratic state where king or the government favors or adopts a religion. Emperor Ashoka had Buddhism as state religion. Many western states were linked to Church.

The politicians go to temple or Muslim shrine for demonstrative affect on the voters. This is definitely anti secular.

How can we say that the politicians are going or worship just for show? It can be confirmed when a Hindu goes to Mosque for some special programme or a Muslim goes to Temple for a special program there during election campaign or just prior to this.

I think secularism is misused by we people also rather than politicians. When one says about his religions merits and others demerits immediately there comes a barrier saying that in secular India this cannot be told. Here being secular every one has the right to have his own belief and to spread his religion. Also to be a person of any religion is not needed. But nowadays the things are just reversed. Those who says the religion is just a backdrawing instrument are considered as secular. So our concept itself about secularism is wrong.

There is nothing wrong in worship or religious views. what is wrong is combining religion with politics, administration, profession and business. Religion is a personal matter and its use in promoting political interests like gaining voters' favor is non secular and is unconstitutional.

In present scenario of Indian politics a BJP is using religion as a matter to keep its members. Also their co team like RSS , Sivasena, VHP etc are raising issues related to religions and beliefs.Still our country has no control on them eventhough we are secular by constitution. At the same time we arrest those minority leaders saying that he had harmed communal harmoney. How this can be in a secular country?

So I think some can mix it with religion while some others can't.That is why I think secularism is in a wrong way in India.

There are double standards and no uniformity. I agree. BJP is definitely using religion for its own ends. Consequently, others also do likewise. Thus there is clear deviation from principles of secularism.

However, we have first to be clear about concept of secularism. Secularism means that religion and politics must not be mixed. any one who does so irrespective of the religion he belongs to is against the letter and spirit of secularism.

I do not say that BJP may mix religion with politics and others not. Nobody should do so. If they do so, they should not proclaim themselves as secular minded.

But here one party uses secularism for their benefit while the others are blamed by these party itself when the same practice carried out!It is a strange thing.

I agree with you Abid, people should never combine the religious views and politics, its really bad. This creates lot of loss. Our country loss lot of merit students due to secularism, by preferring to their religion. In my view politicians should see every one equal they should not be partial to the religion for getting votes.this is not fair on politicians part.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race.

I think our government itself is guilty in using this secularism in double manner. In some cases mostly against minorities whatever they do in accordance to their religious beleif are counted as against secularism. At the same time majority if did something which is really harmful to our secular thoughts there will not be any one word against it.This double stand is to be ceased first.
