Could you remember when you transacted last in small coins like 10 paise, 25 paise. There are many songs on Chavanni and duanni. It appears that soon even fifty paise coin will lose any significance and there will be only Rupee one and more coins and notes.

    I remember 5, 10 and 20 paise coins very clearly and used to save those coins all the time when I was in school. Now even though 25 and 50 paise coins are officially not declared obsolete, still shopkeepers refuse to accept them! 50 Paise coins have already lost its significance as only few people accept them! In Pune, now to avoid hassles of such coins, even bus tickets are now being charged minimum Rs. 10, 15 and denominations of 5 and 10 rupees only!

    I have seen even 1 paisa, 2 paisa and even round 1 paisa with hole in the middle. ikanni, duanni, adhanna and chavanni, Then 1,2,5, 10, 20, 25, 50 paise coins were used commonly but now no one accepts 50 paise apart official counters. Even transort services have rounded off to make it straight to Rupees. In our area even beggars refuse 50 paisa coin. Yes people are taking advantage of their left over coins in temples now.

    Due to inflation small coins and now five rupee notes are becoming obsolete, and now it is becoming faster as two days back we have experienced the highest inflation of all time.

    I do remember the square 5 paise, the round 10 paise and the 20 paise coin as well. I used to buy sweets for myself of only 10 paise and that would make me full. I have very strong and clear memories of me using those coins. But I don't remember when I last used them...

    This shortage of coins causing loss to the people. Take for example , if a thing costs rs.2.50 p, you are forced to pay rs.3 to the trader. The trader will not have 50 p to return. Even he gives that 50 p is useless because, no other trader accepts 50 p.

    Here in Imphal, for the past many years it has been a practise for the shopkeeper to usually give 50 p worth of things like sweets and shampoo. The customers have to accept these things.
