In Karnataka there are Devadasis who are tradiutionally considered to be gods maids. They of course service the priests and other classes but now with times changing they are nothing but sex workers .There has been a lot of attempt made to bring them into the mainstream so that their children get educated and live normal healthy lives.
Some of them are in the acting profession in south Indian films , in fact quite prominent stars which is a good thing ...

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

In Andhra too Devadasis tradition was there. But now this tradition is declining. Most of them joined the mainstream. Highly educated people and well placed families can be seen hailing from this community.

There is a Bedia community that allows the women to trade sex. The link says that this community is in Rajasthan. But we have a colony of this community at Agra near Taj Mahal. Many of Bedia community are working in Mumbai dance bars.

I know this tribe originates fro Dhoulpur area of Raj which is closed to Agra. But this tribe is not limited to Agra but scattered all over the places. People who know about this tribe go to visit areas of this tribe as they are welcome there and stay in their homes.

They are nomads. They shift from place to place in search of customers especially by the sides of Highways catering to the needs of truck drivers.

Yes they like to live nearby highways. Truck drivers are principal customer of this tribes.

The good thing about them is their unshakable faith on their "Khandani Dhanda."

In Puri Jagannath Temple 30 years back Deva dashi tradition was there, now it is completely abolished.

A similar system exists known as Devadasi system in South India. In this system a girl before attaining puberty will be married to a deity or a temple. And after the marriage the girl is destined to become a prostitute for the upper caste community. Though the system was declared as illegal, the system continues, though in a smaller scale.

Devdasi system differs in the sense that girl may be brought from any community. This is religious prostitution. On the other hand, Beria is a particular community. The entire community indulges in the flesh trade. The men solicit and women sell body.

It is the same here in Karnataka but the families are very much there shunned by the society, so they move on to cities and if they are lucky they educate their children and move away from the profession, if not they are again sucked into the same profession inlarger cities..

Some times, a few members of the tribe change the traditional job. Here a woman from Beria community married a govt. officer and she herself is in politics.
