Finance ministry is an important portfolio in the union cabinet. Most minsiters are really not qualified and go by I.A.S. officers advice and they themselves giving only some vague hints. However, Finance Ministry is significant and most of our Finance ministers have been highly qualified.

Yes, good to see most of our finance ministers are well qualified. It would have been still good, had their performance matched with their qualifications.

The main problem of our country is too much population. In the early fifties we wre just forty crore. Now we are 125 crore. Needless to say our natural resources, total land area remains the same. Increasing number of men and women, vehicles, houses and so on makes our land very scarce. Most of our problems like traffic, pollution etc are directly linked with increasing population. Any finance minister cannot change the basic scenerio of too many people using too less resources/ land. Price rise is just a result of this.

True. Problems arising out of over population pose a big problem for every Finance minister. These problems crop up so fast, that by the time the government plans remedial measures, a new wave of population Tsunami surfaces up.
Finance minsitry is the most important post for any central minister and cannot be given away to anyone without a financial background and so far we have had well qualified FMs although one can only blame the political parties for mounting pressure on them which in turn has made them perform not to the best of their capacity...

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

India has 17% of the world's population but only 0.3% of its oil, 0.7% of gas and & 7% of coal. Provision for increasing energy requirements require huge import costs. Finance Ministers should make larger fiscal provisions for harnessing renewable sources of energy like solar, wind , biomass etc, so that India becomes less and less import sources dependent. FM's have to also provide for increased allocation to farm sector which has 20% share in GDP but 60% population is dependent on it. Along with good qualification political pragmatism is also necessary in the FM.
Qualification helps certainly. But those who see the reality, existing country's resources and the requirement to keep the country stand on its own will help more.

Manmohan Singh and PV Narsimha Rao were one such pragmatic pair of qualified and pragmatic pair of politicians. Chidambaram was also good but circumstances many a times overtook his efforts. Let us see how Jaitley handles the economy.
For Jaitley, it's a testing time. It's a challenge for him. It remains to be seen, how he faces the challenge.
