Changing the name of any city does not bring any change or improvement in itself, but adds to the confusion initially and only satisfies the ego of people who wanted a more localized version of the name of the city.

They changed 11 city names at a time. If we allow this culture to grow then every city or state wants to change their names periodically. What is the use of changing the name?

The idea behind the renaming is basically regionalism and nothing else. Most often the people from other states find it difficult to remember these new names and their spelling. For example, the Kerala’s capital ‘Trivandrum’ was renamed to ‘Thiruvananthapuram’ in 1991. It is difficult to remember or spell by a person who doesn’t know Malayalam language.

I think it brings the self satisfaction of getting back our original names back that were misspelled by Brits for their own convenience.

Absolutely none at all...But some people are going to make money since officially they need to change names here and there , other than that nothing much is achieved,I have a feeling that politicians do this to keep themselves in news..

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

If this happens there might be confusions get raised. The people who don't know the regional language gets confused in spelling the city names. Ex: nemlingchery, nemilichery. You can also find the names of some villages with the names of cities.

I agree..all the landmarks, every sign board will have to be changed in all the cities where names have been changed. Other than this I don't see any benefit for commoners.

@Sunil51: If the Brits misspelt the original names, why wasn't it changed soon after they quit India..why now? Don't you think it is too late to react for us Indians.

I Like Kolkata more than Calcutta any day. Would you convince people in Bengal to go back to Calcutta?

I can't convince, and I won't, same goes for all states and cities, it is nothing but regionalism.

That's what we call respect for our own names. There is nothing associated like regionalism with any of that.
Do you know how all Bengali surnames were changed by Brits? You must be aware of the real surnames used before Brit period for sure. All the Banerjees, Mukerjees, Chaterjees and Ghosh etc are only shortened surnames. :)
