Private sector banks' employees work 12 hours against six of nationalized banks besides their job is not permanent but based on quality of work. Government banks pay all perks and facilities including pension at par with government employees. And the way SBI employees treat its customers is some thing to watch upon. The SBI is surviving because all government accounts are with SBI. That means they will be paid extra for the transactions on government accounts mainly.

I dont know how it is in your part of the country but my experience with SBI has always been cordial and I find the staff ever helpful .I have had an account with them since more than 20 years now and compared to the other private banks find them better in every way...I have accounts with ICICI and Yes Bank and other than paying more for all extra transactions in these private banks I don't find them any better than SBI ..

I personally do not have account with SBI but my mother has since she gets pension from central government and have visited an SBI branch many times with her. What I have observed is the staff at SBI are quite partial and treat most of the customers very rudely and some quite nicely.

Then I can only say that it is different scenario here in Mangalore where the staff in most of the branches, who are mainly local are very friendly and helpful...In fact I use my SBI account more than other accounts like ICICI and Yes bank because of the service and low charges for other transactions ..

I Have an account with SBI too but use it only when necessary, the staff of SBI is too busy to entertain its customers but always busy making government drafts or handling government accounts. The Crowded branches with government staff and students seeking drafts is totally a put off for an ordinary customer.

That is news to me because in my branch too they have  these activities but they have a different counter for that and it does not interfere with customer service. Added advantage is that you can use SBI bank account for identity proof and since it is the largest bank, there are ATMs in every corner of the city and even in small villages ...

As kalyani said some branches/person maybe different but most SBI branches are too busy with government work. Possibly smaller branches with not much government work to handle provide better services to their customers but in our area almost every SBI branch does not care for saving account holders. I only use online banking in 'must use' cases.

These days I too use only online banking facilities for paying bills and for cash withdrawal ATMs, I am sure same is the case with many people. As a result you dont see too many people in the banks unless it is work that needs the attention of the staff..

Rudeness and Who cares attitude is the hallmark of almost all the PS Banks. And SBi is not an exception. This is the main reason why many developed an aversion towards PS Banks. I stopped using SBI credit card also. Here in Vizag, most of the ATMs of SBI are sans security guards . Certainly money is not bitter to me. And to save my hard earned money in an unreliable Bank like SBI knowingly is nothing short of foolishness.

I won't say SBI is unreliable or not safe (it's supposed to be the safest)  to use but what I find most disgusting is the way they treat customers due to heavy rush and slow speed of work of their discharging duty. They talk more like government servants in other government offices and have no care for normal service to customers. They still behave like government servant mentality. Most other PCS banks have started behaving professionally and are providing better services. As far rates of interests are concerned, almost all banks in both sectors are at par.

" Unreliable " is purely my opinion and  evolved out of experience and frustration. Good to know that other PCS banks are behaving professionally. It is good for both the Bank and the public.

SBI is definitely not unsafe, calling it that is unfair especially given the fact that it has the largest number of account holders covering almost 50% of the total number of accounts..

I agree SBI has the largest number of accounts but most of them are the ones with no choice as all treasury related works are discharged through SBI only. So, mostly government accounts and employees of various public sector industries/government employees have their accounts in SBI. I have my account in SBI because my salary account was there in SBI. But I mainly use 2 different private banks for my other transactions. And yes, SBI is one of the safest banks of India, next to RBI perhaps.

If not unreliable certainly it is mere callousness and carelessness. Account holders though they do not expect Royal treatment from this Bank, they expect at least a proper and courteous response from the Bank staff. In Vizag branch of SBI this courteous treatment is absent.

I once had an interesting experience in my SBI branch. As I was exiting the bank I saw a sadhu in saffron robes with long hair entering the bank but in a very excited manner. Behind him was a person telling him that HDFC bank was a safe bank and he can open his account in it and will get better service. But the sadhu was telling him what about safety of funds and stated that he only trusts SBI. Incidentally the HDFC branch is located adjacent to the SBI branch but the number of customers in SBI are far more than HDFC. SBI is the most reliable bank and its credit card operations are also at par.

What I said was a personal experience like the Sadhu's. In my place most of the ATMs of SBI are burgled ATMS.

With a minimum bank balance of either rs 5000 or even Rs 10,000, the private banks can afford to give specialised attention to its customers unlike SBI and other PSU banks where they don't insist on any minimum account balance ! And all other charges are higher in private including charges for DD and foreign cheque remittance and other related bank charges and not many people can afford to do that ..
