It is true that in past when horrific events took place we did not see such concerted return of state awards. Why is it happening now needs to be exposed because by saying that it is a concerted move against present government is not enough, it has to be established esp. because too many diverse elements are operating together.  What is bringing them together?

@Usha Who is going to do that? Restoring trust, tolerance is the job of visionary leaders both of the government as well as the opposition. The saddest part such lack of trust is not wanting in Indians among themselves as it is case with leaders of all walks of life. Here a PM who rubbishes the opposition on foreign soils. His views on Nehru is absurd.Nehru had failings but any attempt to bellittle him,his towering stature would make more popular than ever before.I commented months back that as long as Modi would remain committed to his development agenda he would find takers and the moment he veers off to the obscurantism he would meet the fate of failed rulers.I am growing apprehensive about the latter!!

Modi is focused on development. But his fellow travelers joined his bandwagon with an agenda of their own. hitch hiking they have come to power and are now interested in furthering their agenda which is at variance with Modi's developmental agenda. Modi has to tackle them because otherwise he will be the loser.

Basic mistake is to differentiate between RSS peronalities. The RSS and its outfits are very clear about their fascist agenda. Modi is also first a RSS pracharak and anything else next. The RSS and its affiliates have just distributed duties among themselves. Some will provoke, others will regret, still some will talk of 'development and unity'. They do this for confusing people.

I agree that on should not belittle any leader while at home or abroad, it is tit for tat with BJP now because of the manner in which Sonia Gandhi, Mani Shankar Aiyer and Digvijay Singh went on and on about Modi and his Chaiwala origins and his role in Godra ..They started their tirade against him and why the double standards and why do they feel insulted now when their leaders are being targeted ?

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

@Gulshan you have hit the nail on its head by spelling out the distribution of duties between RSS and BJP and the purposeful confusion being generaterd.

There you are sir @chinmoymukherjee, this is what I also wanted to point out that usually the politicians act according to their advantage. This time may be the opposition succeeded in arranging a protest by the intellectual class against the ruling party while the ruling party failed in taking the writers and all in their favour. That's the story and the ruling party is not acting strongly to control this barbarism, why? This is ridiculous. They must step in strongly. From the very beginning Anupam Kher spoke against the return of the award so if it is said that he is against this policy because he is the supporter of the ruling party. So, this solves no problem. Some will support and some will speak against it but the party which is in power must act fast to keep this intolerance under control.

@Usha Modi bashing won't solve the crisis India faces at the moment. The plain truth is that two principal political parties are held hostage - one by RSS and another by Gandhi. This family needs Congress more than Congress do! Gone are the golden moments, the halcyon days of Indian Democracy presided over by no other than Pundit Nehru when he would listen to golden oratory of Vajpayee with rapt attention to pat his back at the end of it to designate him as the 'future PM of India'! How magnanimous of him! And Vajpayee? When he visited South Block first time on becoming PM and its mandarins removing the photo of Nehru furiously asked them:Where is the photo of Panditji? Today a bunch of self-styled conscience keepers are emerging from the wings to usurp a role of back-seat driving our political system and leaders which is a dangerous trend. An open invitation to extra-constitutional and ultra constitutional agency to take over expressing their own lack of faith in present leaders and the system.

Well said @chinmoy. Though far fetched I am reminded of the period immediately after the French revolution when Simon the Butcher would sentence every one to the gullitone who could not improve the rapidly collapsing French economy. Today a Minister has come out with another gem that Did Sonia Gandhi not sleep the whole night when she heard of Osama bib Laden's death. One may have ideological differences but this is pure hatred from both sides. And that is where Vajpayee asking for Panditjis photo speaks volumes.

I agree that politics today has lost all dignity and the politicians have become extremely self centered ..It may all be leading towards civil unrest which would be dangerous for our society . But at the same time one can analyse and go back into the past and gauge as to how things turned out this way and what paved the way .. Past mistakes have cast a long shadow
