I use desk top in office and home both places and so never used smart phone. But the link below opines that smartphone is more useful for several reasons. O course, you may use smartphone also when you are on the move. Probably this is the sort of  difference that a land line and mobile phone have.

My necessities are different. I need to sell my Artwork both conventional and digital to a Publisher. These art works must suit to a write up provided by the Publishers. Some times, it may be otherwise, that is I write my own and draw an illustration that suits the write up.

Hence, However may be a Smart phone, it will not serve my purpose. My Desktop caters to all my needs.

I use every technology I possibly can. I have a desktop, which I use seldom, a laptop my favorite way of communication a tablet and my smartphone, I will not mention the other mobile here although that one is also a help for particular reasons. I do not have a landline anymore which I found of no use after having so many ways of communication. I feel all the technology is useful in some way or the other so there is no harm using it.

Landline is really not of much use.  My father died a few years ago. He used landline more. But I receive many calls on landline. The BSNL internet connection is also linked to landline.

Those who have graduated from desktop to  laptop to smartphone will find desktop to be better esp, for users who are say more than 55 to 60 years and above in age. However the future belongs to smartphones. Salesof desktop and laptops are falling every year appreciably.

@ Vijai - I do not say no to your version but I do not feel any problem using any of the gadgets unless I am at a specific job which I must complete using any specific gadget.

Agreed. What I meant was that people of the elderly age group are much familiar with desktops and changing over to smartphone is a matter of adjustment which many find difficult. I myself took to smartphone after a fairly long time as I was comfortable with desktop/laptops. But yes there are many in this age group who are smartphone savy like you are. Best wishes.

I feel that apart from age factor, issue is of nature of job. If somebody can use internet on desk top, he can use other gadgets as well.  Personally, I have desk top at my residence as well as office.  I don't have to use computer on the way to office half an hour each way. Hence I use only desk top at office and home. But for those travelling for hours and visiting many places, lap top and smartphone is must.

The story of internet in India is only 15 years or so old so most of us have the same knowledge about it. Fortunately I was working with telecommunication sector when the technological changes took place in India. I remember the time when I used to connect @2 seconds for Rs 1.20 + the internet time that I used to purchase from Satyam. Now, I have three personal internet connections (one broadband and two cellular)and it costs me almost nothing if I compare it with 1998-2001 period.

Desktop, Laptop and now smart phone. In future we will see another one. Development of technology never stop. My 1st computer was desk top now I am using laptop. I have wi-fi so I have not problem of connecting it with wire. Laptop is better than desktop. If some like desktop they can use it laptop as desktop, attached keybord and mouse in it.
