Health Benefits of Bottle Gourd (Lauki/Ghiya)

Undoubtedly we all hate when our mom force us to have bottle gourd (lauki/ghiya) in our platter. But did you know that they are one of the favorite vegetables in Indian cuisine and has numerous health benefits. Though, this vegetable is disliked by the children and young people, old people consume it for its benefits in maintaining the good body and good health.

Bottle gourd (a.k.a Lageneria vulgaris) is one of the earliest vegetables cultivated by man, believed to be originated in Africa. It is yellowish-green in color and has white pulp with white seeds embedded in the spongy flesh. It is also known by other names such as bottle squash, white gourd, calabash gourd, lauki, doodhi and ghiya. It belongs to Cucurbitaceae family and is now widely cultivated throughout the tropics, especially India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, China, tropical Africa and South America.

Bottle Gourd has many properties that are valued in traditional healing. Here are a few of them:

Low in Calories and Fat: The bottle gourd is low in fat (just 0.1 gm in 100 gm edible portion) and calories (15 calories in 100 gm) yet high in dietary fiber. It is comprised of 96% water and provides multiple vitamins (vitamin C and some B vitamins) and minerals (iron, sodium, potassium, and trace elements). If you are on a low calorie diet eating bottle gourd is an excellent addition to your diet.

Cooling effect: As bottle gourd is mostly made of water, cooked bottle gourd is not only easy to digest but also contains cooling, calming and diuretic properties. A glass of bottle gourd juice taken in the morning can help prevent heat stroke during summers and cool the body.

Aids against constipation: Bottle gourd, being a good source of fiber content and easy to digest, tremendously helps in curing digestion related disorders like constipation, flatulence and piles.

As Lauki provides good cooling effect it is good to consume it more often during summer seasons.It soothes eye irritation and urinary infections.
Lauki has a lot of benefits.But i can't consume raw lauki juice,so i mix it with tomato and spinach and make it more healthy too...
I havent ate Bottle Gourd before..so i dont have any idea how it looks... :)
I still dislike these items besides health benefits. But thanks for the information. I shall now eat these sometimes despite dislike.

I drink its juice inspite of its bad taste. It is good for my guts. It is better to be drunk alongwith bittergaurd juice.

definitely why not kalyani....here is the recipe to prepare bottle gourd juice

Ingredients:

Bottle gourd - 250 gm or small one (always taste gourd-some times-it is bitter)
Mint leaves - 10-15
Salt to taste
Jeera powder - 1 tsp
black pepper powder - 2 tsp
2-3 tomatoes

Method:
1. Peel bottle gouard and wash, add chopped tomatoes,cut mint leaves
2. Mix in mixture
3. Add water(little )
4. Add jeera, pepper powder and salt. Stir Well.
Bottle gourd or Dudhi or lauki has been a part of Indian Ayurvedic medicines. It has several health benefits.

* Consumption of bottle gourd juice on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning; is beneficial to reduce weight.
* It has a high fibre content and thus useful in regulation of bowel movements.
* It prevents excessive loss of sodium from the body.
* It also helps in controlling excessive thirst in diarrhea, diabetes, and consumption of food rich in fatty acids and oils.
* It helps to reduce acidity of urine and can be used to cure urine infections and acidic urine (burning sensation when you pee.)
* If you are on a low calorie diet eating bottle gourd is a must as it is high in fibre and low in calories.
* Due to its high fibre content it can be used to prevent gastrointestinal disorders, constipation, piles, ulcers etc.
* It acts as a diuretic and calms you down after consumption.
* It helps cleanse your system.
* It has been used to treat epilepsy and other mental ailments.
* It is useful in controlling blood pressure and diabetes.

About 100 ml to 150 ml of juice consumed everyday will make a world of difference.
