Tulsi plant has a lot of significance for mankind, due to the manifold medicinal benefits it provides. Tulsi leaves are widely used in the preparation of Ayurvedic medicines. It is known to promote the longevity of life. The extracts obtained from the plant are extensively brought to use for curing various diseases such as the common cold, inflammation, malaria, heart disease, headaches etc.
Current scientific research offers substantial evidence that Tulsi protects against and reduces stress; enhances stamina and endurance; increases the body’s effi cient use of oxygen; boosts the immune system; reduces inflammation; protects against radiation damage; lessens aging factors; supports the heart, lungs and liver; has antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal properties; enhances the effectiveness of many other therapeutic treatments; and provides a rich supply of antioxidants and other nutrients.

Holistically speaking, Tulsi leaves are premier resources of adaptogen, helping the body and mind to adapt and cope with a wide range of physical, emotional, chemical and infectious stresses, and restore disturbed physiological and psychological functions to a normal healthy state.

Generally vital in enhancing and health promoting properties, Tulsi leaves’ have lots of health benefits and other therapeutic claims and actions, likely accounted for its being natural, organic, safe and certified effective.
So many benefits???  Thanks Neetu for the details..I always eat raw leaves of tulsi plant which are very tasty too.. :P :)
Dental Care: Holy Basil destroys bacteria which are responsible for dental cavities, plaque, tartar, bad breath etc. and protects teeth. It also has astringent properties which make the gums hold the teeth tighter thereby protecting them from falling. But, Tulsi also has certain compounds mercury (having rich germicidal properties) which can be harmful for the teeth if kept in direct contact for a long. Hence it is advised to avoid chewing of these leaves (discussed in holy books and Ayurveda that chewing leaves robs them of their holiness). But it has no harm if you do not chew it or have its decoction.
My only fear is that like turmeric and Neem which USA once unsuccessfully claimed to be it own and attempted to obtain a patent,we may face a similar situation in the case of Tulsi too.
A daily bath with decoction of Holy Basil mixed with your bathing water, or washing your face with it or simply applying the paste of its leaves on infected area of the skin in case of skin diseases or simply consuming Tulsi leaves, keeps your skin free from all infections. You won’t believe this but rubbing basil leaves or oil extracted from it on the body keeps mosquitoes and other insects away. It cures skin disorders internally and externally, without any side effects. This property mainly comes from its essential oils which are highly anti biotic, disinfectant, anti bacterial and anti fungal in nature. External application on the skin also removes extra oil from the skin surface. Camphene in it also gives a soothing cooling effect.
Thanks Neetu for great information on Holy Basil!

A paste made of fresh coriander leaves, tulsi leaves, mint leaves and methi leaves is a very good remedy for pimples and scars caused by pimples. Applying this paste daily will make your skin smooth and completely blemish free.
