Heat Rash Treatment Advice

If heat rash does develop, the treatment of the condition tends to be at home and the condition does not typically require medical attention. Once heat rash is noticed, the removal or loosening of clothing in that area can help to ease the irritation of the area. Further reducing the irritation would be the application of a cool, damp towel on the affected areas. This rag or towel should be placed on the area, but not rubbed on the area. The area should then be allowed to air dry rather than be wiped dry with a towel.

Other treatments for the heat rash include the application of lotions and creams. Lotions that lack fragrance are often the best for dealing with the heat rash. This is because these lotions often lack the alcohol that can cause stinging in the rash. The creams are often creams with a high concentration of aloe which is known for its ability to treat burns and damaged skin. These lotions
and creams can easily be purchased over the counter at any local store.
I find Aloe Vera as most effective and easy to use. This is contained in some bath soaps and hair oil that we may use. Aloe Vera is also available as capsules.

A note on infants:

It’s particularly important to watch out for heat rash in infants, since they’re unable to express when they’re too hot. Here’s what you can do:

* Dress babies the same as adults during the summer months.
* Layer clothing to allow for times when your child may be hot or cold.
* Reach for cotton, loose-fitting clothing, which will breathe and protect the skin.
* Make sure your child is wearing a hat.
* If your child shows signs of heat rash, remove him or her from the heat immediately. And allow them to cool down by removing clothing and applying a cool washcloth to the skin.
* Avoid using lotion or cream, which can exacerbate the rash.
* If the rash doesn’t go away or is accompanied by the above symptoms, see a doctor.
Prevention of Prickly Heat

* The use of a sun cream with a minimum SPF15 is recommended at least 2 minutes prior to going out in the sun and reapplication may be necessary if you intend staying out more than 3 hours.
* Wear loose fitting, cotton or natural fiber clothing and a wide brimmed hat to protect your skin from harsh UV rays and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
* Do not let perspiration dry on your skin as this can lead to further clogging of skin pores; instead wipe away with a clean towel or kerchief and keep skin dry.
