Signs Of Diabetes

Frequent visits to the bathroom, dizziness and weakness are some of the common signs of diabetes
in a person. Diabetes is a medical condition in which the blood sugar level in the body increases due to less or no production of insulin in the body or due to insulin resistance. The unhealthy lifestyle that we lead and the unhealthy and irregular eating habits that we are used to causes a lot of health problems, one of them being diabetes. Diabetes is a disease which is difficult to diagnose in its earlier stages because it goes unnoticed due to its unclear symptoms. Knowing that you have diabetes is the first step in taking measures to deal with the condition. Therefore, it is essential to not only know the causes of diabetes, but also the signs and symptoms of the infirmity. This piece provides you with some of the symptoms of this common disease. Read the following sections to know more.

Diabetes Symptoms

Frequent Visits To The Bathroom
Are you spending a lot of time in the bathroom? Do you feel the urge to urinate frequently all through the day? Well, one of the common symptoms of diabetes is the frequent need to urinate because of excess of glucose in the blood. If the insulin in your body is insufficient and ineffective, the kidneys will not be able to filter glucose back to the blood. This makes them draw extra water out of the blood in order to dilute glucose, thereby keeping your bladder full.

Unquenchable Thirst
An unquenchable thirst for water is another common sign of diabetes in a person. If you feel that you can’t get enough water to quench your thirst and if you are drinking more water than usual, you should go in for diabetes check. In a diabetic patient, your body extracts most of the water from your blood to dilute glucose which leaves you dehydrated and in need for more and more water.

Polyphegia
Another common sign of diabetes in a person is increased hunger. In order to deal with the high sugar levels in blood, the body produces insulin that further increases your hunger thus making you to eat more.

Effortless Weight Loss
Effortless weight loss is a symptom more common with type 1 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes the pancreas stops producing insulin due to viral attacks on the pancreatic cells. This makes the body look for energy sources because the cells do not getting enough glucose. Thus the body starts breaking down muscle tissues and body fat for energy.

Weakness And Fatigue
Our body receives glucose from the food we eat. This glucose travels to the bloodstream where the insulin moves it to the body cells to produce energy needed by our body. In case of diabetes, the insulin is unable to make the transition leaving the glucose in the bloodstream. This makes it impossible for the cells to produce energy thus making you feel weak and worn out.

Blurry Vision
Diabetes can also lead to ‘hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome’ (HHNS), which is a condition when the body fluids are pulled out of the tissues including the lenses of the eyes. This extraction of energy from the eye lenses affects its ability to focus, thus leading to blurred vision.

Irritability
Another common symptom of diabetic attack is irritability in the person. Irritability is caused in the case of high blood sugar levels which are because of the inefficient supply of glucose to the brain and other organs of the body.

Infections
The immune system of the body provides signals of any fluctuations in the blood sugar levels. Fluctuations in the blood sugar level also cause the immune system to suppress causing frequent skin infections like fungal or bacterial or urinary tract infections (UTI).

Poor Wound Healing
High blood sugar levels in the body can also oppose the production of ‘white blood cells’ (WBC) which are responsible for the strong immune system of the body. Blood sugar levels affect the functioning of the WBC thereby affecting the wound healing powers of the immune system. Diabetes also leads to thickening of blood vessels which affects the proper circulation of blood in different parts of the body.

Numbness In Your Hands, Legs Or Feet
Diabetes can also cause some nerve damage. The high sugar levels in the blood causes damage to the nervous system, often without our knowledge. A few of the symptoms of nerve damage caused due to diabetes are numbness or tingling sensation in the hands, legs or feet.
