Hi Sudhi,
Its great to have a personal laptop. I believe in DELL computers.
Please check this link to get idea about price and variety of Dell laptops: http://www.dell.com/home/laptops
Go for Inspiron series it gives better performance and Value for money.
The main factors you must look are:
Processor Performance,
Looks,
Battery life,
Motherboard,
and other stuff like DVD writer, that you want to add.

Hey Apple Inc. is so cool, but it costs much, it has student offer....with apple you can install any OS you want, but with other computer( like Dell,Microsoft,etc....) you can't install Apple Mac OS X.....
And the first step in buying a computer is taking a better info of the chip....make sure its upgradable.....
Then for gaming there are separate laptops available.......
This Is My Suggestion:
buy a quad processor, or i7 or atom(hafnium)
RAM, so cool if it is 4GB
graphic card= well it goes better for desktops but there are worthful GC for laptops too
then there are lots.....
make sure you buy a computer on a whole sale store( indeed they sell single pieces)
this is my info (as a beginner)
Hope It Helps
Bye
