Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.

Nobody has ever said that pragmatism (practicability) is bad. But there is one catch here. The more difficult and good things are difficult to attain and are rejected as impractical. For example, dishonesty is practical whereas being honest is idealistic. Making two centuries in cricket is impractical but getting out without making any score is very practical. we have to strive for idealistic goals and make these practical.
