We only need to see the organizational pattern to find out autonomous or departmental status of CBI. Many claim that CBI is autonomous. some say that CBI is govt run. Now an affidavit is filed in supreme court that CBI is under government control.

CBI is not a constitutional post and is definitely organized as a govt department. It is so bizarre to certain people looking for autonomy in this organization.

The declaration of CBI chief Ranjit Sinha in this regard says it all. CBI is under government control

It never was but neither was it responsible to PMO. At the most law ministry could suggest it on few issues, that was all.

I agree it is bizzare to hope that CBI is autonomous, the question is, so what power does it have ? It will function as the ruling government dictates, so why have it in the first place? any odd organisation will do ?

CBI was never an autonomous body. This fact is known to all. This does not mean that the organization does not function. Autonomy cannot be a solution. Just try making every organization autonomous and see the fun. Then government will have no responsibility. To make government responsible, you need to put the organization under government control.

They admit it now but every one know than it is under government. Indeed no one political party wants that CBI will be a autonomous. All wants to use it for their benefits.

I think the Supreme Court has bared it all with all its Constitutional expertise and nobody needs to arrogate to himself or herself to be knowing the Constitutional provisions better than the Apex court which has been very emphatic in stressing the need to free this body from the clutches of political bosses. In a case where the government is a party to case it is highly unethical on the part of anyone remotely associated with the government to have a sneak peek into the report proposed to be submitted to the Court!

True, Autonomy is not the solution, but effective implementation of the respective provisions in the act is.
