Some times words hurt but these may also change life. The classical example is of Goswami Tulsidas, author of Ram Charit Manas, whose life turned a new leaf just because of harsh wods of his wife Ratna.

True. A word that seems bad word outwardly, may make the other person more determined and more committed.

Hurling abuses is something different from saying a bitter truth.

A bitter truth is after all truth which people fail to accept when in a normal mood, even people refrain from saying it upfront when in a normal frame of mind but when we are annoyed the truth sometimes makes its way out.

As you said its truth, but bitter. Very less can assimilate a Bitter truth.
Why only words ? even a glance or a look can hurt as much when there is strianed feeling between people, but at the same time one cannot be on guard all the time , so sometimes things do get out of hand and one can only try their best to repair the damage, that is if it is really worth it !

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

True. It's not just the words, a frown too can do the damage as good as a hurting word.
Also, certain people are blessed or rather cursed with a sharp tongue. They just can't control their tongue, which goes against them. Hurting people with their words is like a a habit to these kind of people.

Yes right. They are quite unaware how hurtful they can be at times. Often people claim that they are very straightforward and always speak their minds but it should not be at the cost of hurting others.

We cannot change others. But we can change ourselves. The sharp tongued people should be kept at distance.

Words one's spoke cannot be taken back so we must very careful before what we are going to speak and also hurt wait for the time to take revenge.
waiting to take revenge will only hamper our own mental peace. People who have this habit of making hurtful comments without any reason should be best avoided. I think it is better not to think about these people and waste time unnecessarily because you cannot change them.............it is simply their nature.
