The Uttar Pradesh government has asked views of political parties as to why elections to the local bodies not be conducted on individual basis instead of party basis as at present.

The political parties have been given very little time to consider. Apart from this, political parties have a big role in democracy. so, depriving political parties of their role in local bodies is a setback to democratic system. Also, there should be uniformity in the entire country. If elections to corporations and municipalities in other states like West Bengal are on party basis, why not in U.P. It is also alleged that the current ruling party wants to grab control of local bodies indirectly as the party's popularity is on decline.

I remember reading somewhere that the late Chief Minister of West Bengal P.C.Sen once propounded the concept and sincerely worked to implement it.But there were very few takers.
Now, the U.P government has taken final step. The mayors will be elected direct as before. The elections for members of municipalities and corporations will be on non party basis.

Let us see how it fares but I think the political parties would be pulling strings from behind!
The tradition of single party rule is to be changed.Actually it is the problem that lead to decission like this.
