How to make room-mate stop smoking in the room that we share!

If you are not a smoker then it would be a big problem if your room-mate smokes in the room that you share with him and eventually making you a passive smoker...?

Yes,
Passive smoking is also danger as active smoking...
And non smoker should stay away from it. We should not stand near a person who is smoking.

I the case given by you, one approach would be to ask him politely to smoke outside the room or not to smoke when you are there.

If he is not listening then I think we should go to higher authorities. (may be Owner of room, or Head of hostel, Principal etc)

If you have the option to select a room partner, yiu may selkect one who does not smoke. Otherwise you need to make some adjustment. Talk politely to the room partner. Let him not smoke too near to you in an irritating way. Let him smoke at some safe place and come back to the room after smoking. Presently, smoking in public places is prohibited. But your room is not a public place. If you can't adjust, try to change room partner. The problem is similar to family where husband and wife differ.

I had to share a room in my office with an executive who was a smoker. I expressed my displeasure many times yet he never cared for the same.

One day I bought a surgical mask from the market and put it on when he lit a cigarette while discussing with some visitors.

He looked at me wearing a mask and immediately extinguished his cigarette. after that he never smoked in the office room rendering me a passive smoker...

it's sounding like Gandhigiri :)
Anyway, nice move.
Yes Madhuri,

I played a sort of Gandhigiri, because being an executive engineer I could not shout at him... yet, the things came to a pleasent conclusion.

My colleague was a Colonel... we turned into friends from being merely colleagues... jusst after this incident.

He thought that I have a good sence of humor.

Just thought of sharing with you regarding smoking in a rajini film that came to my mind when i read this discussion. Film name is 'Arunachalam'

Rajini used to smoke a lot and he did not hear his father's advice. One day his father bought enough cigarattes to fill the room and ask rajini to finish it off before the next day morning. Rajini smoked sincerely and finished all the cigarettes. But there after he did not even like the smell of cigaratte. The point he want to stress here is if something we do in excess, we will dislike that in one stage.

Hello Santosh Kumar Singh, Amit Warkari, Meean,

Thanks friends for joining my mission against ACTIVE & PASSIVE SMOKING...!

By doing the above Gandhigiri, I not only saved myself from passive smoking; the Gandhigiri eventually resulted with a sweet note that my Colonel friend left smoking within a couple of months.
