in Improving English Writing Skills
Let us consider following sentences:

I have three books to read.

I have to read three books.


I have miles to go before I sleep

I have to go miles before I sleep.


Kindly explain difference in meaning in alternate sentences.

    I think, "Have to" means "compulsorily we should do"

    "I have three books to read. " means it's my decision if I should read or not

    "I have to read three books. " means I should compulsorly read those three books. It may be an assigned task or home work given by some one else.


    Same is the case of the second set of sentences

    Very correct. Moreover, In first sentence, 'I have three books' is significant'. It signifies that you possess three books, which are for reading. The second sentence lays stress on 'have to read'. Here nothing about possession. You must read three books- your own or borrowed from library or friend.

    Obviously in the case of the first sentence - there are three books remaining unread out of many and in the second instance - it is only three books that the person intends to read!
