Even many people on facebook have a habit of publishing status as immediately as they do or perform something new in their life.

Not necessarily a new thing they do. Even they write in their status as, OOOhhh... aaahha, just now i got up. All that Rubbish as if its an international event.

This is all because they want to remain active on facebook. They want to show that they use facebook regularly..... Even my brother do this.

A herd mentality. There are people in my knowledge who cannot spell Face Book and cannot write a single sentence without grammatical mistakes.

Very true ! and now with the tracking facility since your mobile gets connected to FB, your profile updates your movements as well ! So and so is at Hotel Taj or is in the Mumbai airport and so on...I hate this invasion on privacy !

Such people are only showing off and trying to scream to the world that they have ARRIVED in life with all the trappings, shopping in malls, dining in five star and trendy places etc. But no one stops to think if it is right to post such information and that it can even prove harmful !!

I too find the whole thing unpalatable because of what it might involve. But some of my friends are very happy with this since they think it is somehow stylish. In fact some of them are perpetually updating images from hotels even as they are dining and during New years eve it was really crazy the way people kept uploading the party pictures LOL...it is highly amusing !

Yes it is highly amusing and sick at the same time too! I don't know what people are thinking when they post statuses accompanied with photos like 'sitting at the window of Air Lufthansa' 'On the steps of the Coloseum' 'Having Tiramisu now' etc. etc. Are they trying to make others feel jealous or are being plain stupid???  A few weeks ago, a friend posted her and her very young daughter's photo taken at a very famous international airport and did not forget to post that her daughter was on her way to India all alone, without escort and that she was leaving for a European vacation with a friend after some time!!! Now how potentially damaging this info is to be displayed publicly???

That really is plain stupidity ! The lady in question is putting her daughter at such a great risk ! What is wrong with these women , one wonders ! It is more to do with keeping up with the joneses than anything ! Someone puts up some pics and I want to go one step further...

There is no end to such examples of plain stupidity. Chinmoy did mention above that only negative points are being focussed here, I agree there are even positive points about FB usage and for people who own businesses and work online, FB is a boon, but overall when you see, I think personally that if FB were to close down, more good would happen than bad, and more importantly productivity would increase many times.

@Kalyani

Here I would disagree! Closure of FB won't lead to any such thing, rather more such platforms would come to fill in the void. I personally believe that how one leverages this technological marvel is far more important than any thing else. My personal experience is that it won't have been possible for me to set up very productive relationships with some friends who are in all parts of the world and they are all real ones!!!

What you say is indeed true and cannot be disputed, but from my point of view, the kind of time young people are putting into such sites, it seems sheer wastage of talent and brains into fruitless endeavors. Do you know the number of youngsters who are connected on FB, whatsapp, etc. etc. ?? The number is quite astounding, and at an age, when they could be doing something better, like learning something useful such studying or being more productive etc. they are wasting time posting updates and clicking Like on useless photos and posts! But you are right, if it goes, there are more similar waiting to take its place!

Uses, abuses, misuses are all parts of any new development. It has indeed opened up new vistas of knowledge. For instance the other day one of my young friends was seeking information on decorative fish farming of which I knew not even iota and asked him to join the aqua farming group of FB. I met him yesterday to receive thanks from him!!

Advantages of FB cannot be ruled out completely especially for those knowledge seekers. Many times youngsters come to me to open an account on FB. When I ask them what they would do in the FB, they reply, it's to click on ' likes'. And this category is very high in number in FB.

Many youngsters create account for chatting and adding images. They click photograph and add it to Facebook.

Exchange of ideas is one of the greatest advantage we have on facebook.I have some friends from Uk and they visit India frequently and I give them whatever information I can from my side which comes in helpful during their visit similarly if I were to visit Uk I am sure I will get some help from them.I also have discoved many new things through Facebook...As far as I am concerned FB has only added value and as for the eccentricities of some friends , I take it as a side show :P ...keeps me entertained !

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

With all said and done FBs balance sheet says more losse than benefits.
Yesterday i read a news item that an unwed mother from Chili, Veronica has announced in the FB that her newborn is for sale. This irritates me.

I agree, such comments and posts are indeed similar to a sideshow and we must learn to take it with a pinch of salt and laugh! :woohoo:

Earlier there were social sites like myspace which has all but vanished now after FB came into existence. FB has brought in a kind of revolution so to say , at least to the Indian web users ..

Orkut is another famous social networking site before 5 years, but popularity of Orkut is decreases because of Facebook.

Just before Orkut, rediffbol and gmail chatting were popular. These sites were good for communication with the people who are living far our.

Now people are similarly busy on whatsapp! It is so irritating to keep receive constant messages, videos and photos on your mobile all the time! How come people are not exasperated by it all?

I use FB with strict privacy control and synch with android to automatic uploading photos, share to close knit user groups, it is ignorance of user which is mailing privacy intrusion, I do not use it to learn about types of people on FB,
