Nagara Panchami is an important festival here in Mangalore since the majority of the people were agriculturists in the olden days. This year it falls on the 15 August..we normally go to Kudupu a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Anantha Padmanabha and Subramanya , taking milk ,flowers and coconuts and other stuff as offerings on that day.

How can it be the beginning of Shravan today? Just two days back, it was Guru Purnima, and Shravan starts after the new moon day or Amavasya which falls on 11 August, so Shravan or Sawan will begin on 12th.

No Hindu months starts after Purnima or full moon day not after Amavasys..In Rajsthan Teez festival is main festival of Sawan month, What is your state plz tell me.

Maharashtra, well we follow a different concept. Right now, we have the month of Ashadh which will end on the Amavasya and then Shravan will begin in which we have different festivals beginning with Nag Panchami, a celebration to honour and worship snakes to highlight their importance and significance for agriculture.

Yes it is differnce. Here Every new Hindu  month begin after Purnima. We also worship snakes but we will do it is Bhado Month. Here in Rajasthan one town Goga Medi is famous for fair and also for God of Snakes,  Goga ji. Here Shravan month is month of female. Here it is ritual that in first Sarvan month after marrige mother -in -law and daughter-in-law does not live together. Whole Sarvan month girls spend at parents home.

Interesting rituals. But what is the concept behind not allowing the mother in law and daughter in law to live together in the first shawan after marriage?

Nag Panchami for us comes in month of Bhado that follows sawan.

Is it only in Mangalore or whole of Karnataka? Because we celebrate in a similar way all over Maharashtra, most rural places, people used to worship live snakes but it is now banned as unscrupulous people started stitching up the snakes' mouths so most places clay statuettes of snakes are made

Kalyani, it is celebrated all over Karnataka especially in smaller towns..at Kudupu temple there is a huge anthill where serpents reside and milk offering is made and I have seen one of the serpents once . They don't do anything , at least that's what the priests say anything

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Swings ( sawan ke jhoole) is a tradition in North India too. People who have old traditional houses put the swing in their courtyard and enjoy it. The swing stays till Janamashtmi ( bhado month). The birth of baby Krishna is celebrated and then he offered the swing for another 7-11 days and then the swing is taken off.

We both are from North India and you are from my neighbor state so some ritual are same. Swing, Ghewar and Firni, but we do not weal yellow cloth and make yellow color rice. In Rajasthan yellow color is associated with Basant spring month. Here in Rajasthan women of Jaipur and nearby area wear sarees of lehnga make of Lehahriya work. These are multi color and have special design . See some  Cloth of sarees and lehnga have design of waves. so it is called Lehariya.

In our culture sawan is associated with green color. Women buy green dresses and bangles to wear it in Sawan. I got some green bangles that I will wear on Monday after pooja of Lord Shiva. And on most of the days, I am wearing green dress especially on all Mondays.
