I think this issue was raised, debated and implemented in West Bengal under the Left Rule with disastrous consequences. Contrary to generally held belief a child's capacity to learn languages is faster in the formative years! Why can't we have both! Even leading English medium schools have a subject in vernacular language under language section!

I think that medium of instruction should be mother tongue with english as a subject till eighth class. Thereafter English should be the medium of instruction. Moreover, I feel that Roman alphabet should be used for all languages.

Gulshan sir, do you mean all languages should have Roman alphabet? Even Devnagri script should be removed and replaced with Roman alphabet?

In my opinion both languages are important and both should be the medium of studies there and its up to the parents of kid to choose between the two. :)
We should give importance to English equally as our mother tongue. In future without English we will not go in advance.

I remember what Pandit Nehru once said in some other context that a person's lingual skills get vastly improved when more than one language is studied.so early exposure to other languages is beneficial and more so when the world itself is getting close than ever before!
Our present education system is giving importance to English, of course and our higher studies, we can't get it in our regional language. So, it is better, our kids earn that language from their childhood itself.
I think, most number of languages are spoken in our country, including many folk languages. So, if we want to communicate with our country as a whole, a common language became essential, in early years, soon after our independence itself. So, English has become this much popular. If we want to communicate with whole world, we again want a common language. This made English most inevitable part of our studies.
So, English should be learnt. But we should never forget our Mother tongue. We should learn it at our school. Otherwise, it may be like applying oil to our head, forgetting it. (A proverb translated :P )
In Kerala, Malayalam has made compulsory to CBSE schools too, this year. Such steps from government must be encouraged with open heart :)
Otherwise many students don't even know who are our great poets.
I am saying truth.....I had 3-4 friends in my college, who don't know to write Malayalam, very good or know about our great poets or poems, because they studied Central Government syllabus.

Meera sandhu
most of the competitive exams are completely based on English. Now a days the primary common language is English. If we have good English speaking then we can get job very easily.

You understood me well. If we adopt Roman as common alphabet for all languages, communication will be easier, less expensive and better understanding of all languages. The difference between Hindi and Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu is only of alphabet. I think that the newspapers of all languages should be in roman script.
The script like Devnagri, Gurmukhi, Persian etc may be okay for the religious clergy for rituals.
