Uttrakhand tragedy- How many killed will always be mystery

Uttarakhand Chief Minister has conceded that there can not be true estimate of those killed in the calamity. Many had watery grave. That is why insurance companies are also relaxing rules on presumption of death. Our sympathy is with all those killed in the tragedy- especially the unknown.

    Some are estimating it to be around 1,000 and some 10,000. People are still waiting for their loved ones to return. Lucky are those who have safely returned with all their family members.

    People are just counting the pilgrims and tourists and seeing how many of them were rescued and sent back and how many stranded. But there is greater misery to local population in Uttarakhand. Their homes are destroyed. They have nothing left. They have no job. The pilgrims and tourists have everything back at their home town.

    There is need to rehabilitate the local population taking this as a national issue. They need be paid compensation and training/ employment opportunities if necessary in places outside Uttarakhand.

    Looking at the topography of the areas affected and the scale of destruction I won't simply guess! Apart from rehabilitation of countless suffering millions, this apocalyptic tragedy has thrown a larger and far more profound question of sustainable development in this country. We have to introspect on our misdeeds in the name of development. The kind of so-called development which the hilly and mountainous terrains of the Himalayas, have been witnessing with the blessings of our economists, planners and governments, it is the perfect recipe for perdition and this monumental tragedy is just the precursor! I would be the happiest man in this planet if I am proved wrong!!!

    Yes this is sad! :(

    People still are missing there. When ever I see the news I feel sad. I recently read the team of 200 people who went to Kedarnath from Delhi and a single person from that team still not found. :(

    The major political parties are accusing each other instead of cooperating in this unprecedented disaster. There are also some religious issues involved in the matter.

    And the exact figure continues to be mystery. Many are missing. Their fate is not known.
    As more and more help is pouring in, the rehabilitation measures are also picking up momentum. Shelter building exercise for those whose houses were swept away already started. Tourism is the main occupation of the local people. Of all the roads that lead to different Dhams, the road that leads to Kedarnath is worst affected. A 6 km road was washed away. And the re-laying of this road is the top priority of the government. And the work is in progress .

    No one can estimate the losses suffered caused by a calamity of this magnitude. And the stats of the Government are well known for their authenticity.

    The Uttarakhand government has now set up an authority to rehabilitate people. This was really urgently required. This is welcome and let us hope that the newly found authority will work expeditiously for rehabilitating the people who have lost home, job, lives and property.
