Satyajit Ray was born in Calcutta on 2nd May 1921. His father, Sukumar Ray was an eminent poet and writer in the history of Bengali literature. In 1940, after receiving his degree in science and economics from Calcutta University he attended Tagore's Viswa-Bharati University. His first movie Pather Panchali won several International Awards and set Ray as a world-class director.

Sharmistha Banerjee
One of the greatest film directors India ever had. I have seen many of his creations in Bangla as well as dubbed ones.

A befitting honor to one of our rarest geniuses by Google! He was not only a great film-maker - a very popular literary figure too.

Although his debut film 'Pather Panchali' made history and still remains one of the defining moments of Indian cinema which incidentally has been celebrating its centenary year, I find his other films - no less memorable. 'Jalshaghar', 'Nayak' are my great favorites. What about his children film 'Goopyee Gayen Bagha Bayen which was based on his grandfather's children fantasy??

I have seen almost all his films including the one Hindi film he directed Shatranj ke Khiladi....One can only speak in superlatives about his films...

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

What a coincidence this is. When on one hand we are happy because of the legend's birthday, on the other, another Bengali legend leaves yes.
But happy birthday to Satyajit Ray!

Indian by birth. Universal by virtue.
Satyajit Ray was an artistic yet relaistic film maker. I remember a scene from his Pather Panchali where the old lady is eating rice sitting on the floor and the scene where it rains, water dripping down from the leaves and flowers - Bimal Roy used this kind of nature photography a lot in his films..
