Do a person's basic traits and characters change over time?

It's true, the society in which we live deeply influence our characters and behaviour. A few things we gain and learn from our family, close friends, school, society etc, since the day we are born. Yet each person own a few basic elements which he carry since his birth through genes. For example: Some kids are very silent and talk little while a few naughty. Twins can also be contrast in characters and behaviours. When kids grow up, most of them retain some of those basic traits.

Do those basic characters and behaviour change over the time? Can a person change fully to a new person? Can social life and life experiences change his concepts on life and behaviour? What do you think?

We all are born with a temperament and that is unchangeable throughout the life. This temperament is a mix of genetics and the uniqueness that Nature gives to all individuals. In the formative years that is up to 7 years, your personality is developed and it stays with you throughout. Your innate temperament and the external influence make your personality.

The temperament and personality do not change. However, you can bring behavioral changes by conscious effort. Our behavioral changes include our attitude, our perception, our control over emotions etc.. which can be brought upon by conscious effort. But the temperament you are born with and the personality you developed stays same.

I inherited a few traits from my family, especially from my father, who is a voracious reader. This trait continues even today. Owing to this I became a better writer. and this gave me a job in a local Publishing house

Next I became an artist owing to the influence of my surroundings. I had seen how some artists making money and making both name and fame. This prompted me to look towards both conventional and digital painting.

Hence I am of the opinion a person's traits will be dictated by both internal and external factors.

I guess the character and behavior does change based on your environment and also because of the influence of the people around you. I say this from my personal example. Prior to my marriage - i was silent, submissive and to an extent dependent. But my hus has a character exactly opposite to me. He is loud, aggressive, independent and out going. Over the 7 years of our married life i see our characters changing both for him and as well as for me.

Both genes and environment plays a role in determining the characteristics and traits in a person and environment plays a greater role because it can completely change a persons traits ..

An individual definitely evolves over time. I do strongly feel that the basic characteristics of an individual does not change.
