Daily soaps or old Doordarshan serials?

I think daily soaps started in the year 1994 with Shanti on Doordarshan, followed by Swabhiman. With cable network boom, small screen got completely dominated by daily soaps. If I recollect from memory serials shown on Doordarshan in the early 1990s or late 1980s (except Chandrakanta, Ramayana and Mahabharata - 1 hr episodes every Sunday mornings), all serial episodes last for just half an hour and we need to wait one full week to see its next episode. But it's nice to see the continuation episode exactly after a week. Also, they will end in 13 episodes....

But what's the scene now??? Kabhi Sauthen Kabhi Saheli played for long 11 years. Same is the case of other soaps. Earlier, quality was the prime aim rather than TRP ratings. Now everything is based on TRP ratings....As long as TRP ratings are high, episodes go on, go on and go on. Otherwise, the show winds up within a year. Also how many techniques...Plastic surgery to replace a new actor, killing the character if an actor is to quit the show....bringing him back to the show as re-birth or something else if TRP rating goes low....It's nothing short of 'real-life comedy shows'. Isn't it ridiculous?

personally i don't have even a single moment to waste for this useless soaps. But I regularly used to watch Doordarshan serials...Udaan, Ghutan, Mrignayani, Tehkikaat, Mashaal, Phulwanti etc on Doordarshan in the 1990s, during my teens. Shaktimaan too...haha (till its episodes started dragging). Buniyaad, Karamchand, Malgudi days etc are still nostalgic for many.

Which one do you prefer - daily soaps or weekly? Do you think quality of present day serials are good than those played in the 1980s and 1990s? I think films have advanced very much and now directors are experimenting with new subjects. But in the case of serials, it's still centuries backward - old stories of traditional homes, grand weddings, saas-bahu quarrels etc etc....

Sandhya Rani Sir am asking about old Doordarshan serials that used to be telecasted on weekly basis (not like serials of today 5 or 7 days a week_) - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago

If I remember right I saw Hamlog on DD in 1976 or 77. Correct me if I am wrong. I saw it in a restaurant while eating but to be frank I have not much interest in TV serials.

Sandhya Rani I have read about Humlog....But i was not born that time. We bought TV in the mid 1980s when I was studying in class 2. In those days, I don't know Hindi and Malayalam serials have not started....Malayalam telecast starts at 6.30 pm, news at 7.30 and Malayalam telecast ends at 8.40 pm, Hindi news starts....
Hum to bache the...we sleep earlier.....But since then I used to regularly watch Rangoli, Chitrahar and Hindi movie shown on Sundays though I cant understand the language. (in those days Hindi movies were shown on sundays only and regional movies on saturdays)

suni51 I only have interest in laughter shows call it what you like. I don't care if someone thinks I am a pretender :) - suni51 - 10 years ago
Sandhya Rani Now I remember 'Dekh bhai dekh' with Fareeda Jalal playing the lead role. It was telecasted in the miid 1990s..Then Ek se badkar ek countdown show....I like both these sitcoms very much....I think Sriman Srimathi too - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago
suni51 Dekh bhai was more popular for Shekhar Suman and three children plus the actress that played Shekhar's wife. I liked that one for it was so much laughter in that - suni51 - 10 years ago

With this post of yours, I can remember yes I used to watch Shanti and Swabhiman when in school but the soaps you have mentioned were the only form of entertainment then, with limited no.of serial people had no choice but to watch them and enjoy the weekly episodes. But I have stopped watching all ever dragging serials on Starplus, zee etc I now like soaps of Zindegi channel..they have strong scripts, good actors and short episodes which gets over with 13 or 15 episodes. I also don't know why many people even when they watch soaps don't feel like saying it it n public. What is wrong in it?
Answered
Sandhya Rani because they themselves know it's time waste....
also all want to show them as advanced and modern. But our serials are still busy with joint families and traditional homes, that existed one century ago....
If serial directors too try experiments, giving fresh topics and edit scenes as much as possible, 'logon ka nazariya badal jaayega'....

I think "Hum Log" , "Buniyaad" were the two serials to be started on doordarshan first. I remember Ashok Kumar used to anchor "Hum Log". I don't like serials these days as they don't look real these days. Recently I have been serials on channel " Zindagi" which shows some good serials at least better than what Ekta Kapoor makes.

Sandhya Rani I think Ekta Kapoor should take blame on herself for destroying Indian television....same as the case of entertaining movies of today which become huge blockbusters without a strong story line. - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago

I used to like Hum Log and Buniyaad, and later on Nukkad. Comedy serials like Sarabhai versus Sarabhai were also quite enjoyable. Nowadays all we get to see is tearjerkers where the women are always decked up from head to toe and hatching schemes so wicked that would put even a real witch to shame!

Sandhya Rani Ha ha ha...nice reply......

Actually the serials have given a bad image to Indian woman, which is far away from reality. Woman of today are self-independent, well-educated and has her own opinions, dreams and passions.....

Old DD serials were the beginning of the daily Soaps trend and something that will always be special, in it's own way.
