Most of desktop Pc users, who use windows operating system, have been using the same type of desktop layout since the advent of GUI(graphical user interface).Since Microsoft Windows was a prominent leader in devoloping operating systems, the desktop they designed became a bechmark which other oprating systems followed/imitated when they intoduced GUI in their operating systems.

This type of plain/grid aligned view of icons were devoloped to ensure the ease or user interaction with the help of mouse. But now we have more human interface devices like graphic tablets, touch screen, etc. So the standard style of desktops is no longer attractive.

The machintosh users have access to a rather pepped up desktop interface, but again it is not much..
