Typing Text On Paths and Shapes - PHOTOSHOP
A._) Typing Text on Custom Paths:
Drawing using Pen tool:
Use the Pen tool to draw the curves. Create a new layer first and name it and then use the pen tool to draw. The layer has nothing to do with pen tool path because pen tool path does not appear as a layer but for adding color to the path we need a layer. Click on an area and then click near the point but this time do not remove your finger from the mouse but instead drag towards any direction to form a curve. Repeat the process for few times till you get a desired shaped curve. You can see the path shape in first section of the above image. Now in the layer box, near the Layer option on top, you should see an option called paths. Since the paths are not formed in separate layer, this is where they are available. You can come here to delete or rename or add color to paths.
Type on the path drawn:
After drawing a path, Click the ‘Type tool’ and move the cursor near the path. Once moved near, the cursor changes its shape. It means you can start typing. Type the text and it automatically takes the shape of the path. You can see how the image appears on the path in the second section of the image above. Since the path is visible you can delete the path in the Paths option in layer box( by selecting the path and right click and select the option- delete path). Then only the shape of the text is visible which looks neat as shown in the Third section of the above image.
B._) Typing Text on Shapes and adding effect to the Shape area:
Draw a circle using The Shape Tool. To draw a circle, select the Ellipse shape and by holding SHIFT, drag the cursor to get a circle shape instead of oval shape. You can see the result in the first section of above image. Once the circle is drawn, follow the same procedure as above- ‘Type on Path drawn’. Once you type the text, the shape is automatically converted to a work path and is visible in the Paths option in layer box. You can see the text in the second section of the above image.
Now under the Paths option, select the circle. Right click the circle path and select the option, ‘Make selection’. The circle is selected, now fill the circular area with white color using, ALT + Backspace (in a new layer). Now the circle is in a separate layer so you can adjust the Blending options to the area. I have selected a default style available. You can make any adjustments. The result is shown as follows:
C._) Typing on shapes and adjusting the distance between Text and shape and placing an image in a shape:
Use the above steps A and B to first create a shape, in this example a polygon using shape tool and type text using the same procedure as discussed above. In the section –B, we filled the shape area with an effect. Here we are going to paste an image file to fit inside the shape. First open any image file. I chose an anime girl’s face. Select the face of the girl using Rectangular Marquee Tool and go to Edit menu > Copy. Now come back to the document you were working, Select the shape (by right click and use Make selection option) and go to Edit menu > Paste into to place the image into the selection. You can use the Move tool to adjust the image perfectly into the shape area. You will have something as seen in section two of above image.
Now, if you feel that the Text is placed too close to the shape, you can distance them. The options for these are available at: Windows menu > Paragraph. When the dialog box opens, select Character option and the spacing can be adjusted at- ‘Set the Base line Shift’ which is denoted by a symbol- Capital A with small in exponent form. Increasing the value here increases the distance.
1.) The following are the settings for the image pasted into the shape:
The background for the image is Black color with filter effect. Use, Filter menu > Filter gallery > Texture > Patchwork.The text is warped as seen in the image.
a.) Inner shadow settings:
Blend mode- Multiply
Color- # 13bfd3 at Opacity- 100%
Angle-120 degree
Distance-65px, Choke-0px and size-13px
Contour- Linear and Noise-0%
b.) Bevel and Emboss and Contour:
c.) Satin settings:
Blend mode- Multiply
Color- # 4ad11a and Opacity-100%
Set the Angle- 19% and distance is-21px with size set as 18px.
Use the ’Ring Double’ contour option and DO NOT select the ‘Invert’ option.
d.) Stroke settings:
Size- 6px positioned at centre.
Blend mode set to Normal with opacity 100%.
Fill type set to Gradient and gradient used is available by default- Dark spectrum
Gradient is placed at an angle-90 degree in Linear style and scaled to 100%.
2.) You can also use the ‘Create Warped Text’ option under Text. I used the style- TWIST and the text effect suits the polygon design as seen above.
D._) Typing Text over a glowing/ filled path:
Use the procedure discussed under A to draw a path. Once the path is drawn, create a new layer and select the path (you can select path by selecting Paths option) right click and select the option- ‘Stroke path’. Under tool, select Brush and click the option- Simulate pressure. Note: You have to set the brush style, size and color before selecting the stroke path option. Once it is done the path is colored with brush and is seen in the layer you created. The path with Text looks as like the image below. Set the mode of the Text to Color Dodge. Only then the text will get double color. The background for this can be created by having a layer with Black and orange radial gradient filled.

E._) Type Text around a Text:
For this, Type a text (in this example, ‘B’) with
Font- ‘Times New Roman’ and Style-Regular
Size- 350pt and use sharp effect.
Color- # 511c4a. Now create a duplicate of this Text using CTRL + J and rasterize the duplicate text. Once rasterized, use the Magic Wand tool and select the alphabet B. Once selected, right click and select- ‘Make work Path’. A path is created and now you can type the text around it. Adjust the distance for text in Paragraph box.
