Today is 6^th December and it is just not a like a day and a date like any other day and this is the date of 1992 that would go down in the history of Independent India as day of national shame. This is day on which the Babri Masjid crisis culminated in the demolition of the centuries old masjid by a few thousands religious fanatics and engaged themselves in this mindless act of vandalism which doubtless dealt a severe blow to our plural culture and rich heritage of unity in diversity. India is a melting-pot of countless languages, cultures and religions. It is a land of innumberable sages and seers whose teachings are not only treasures of our country but these have been found to be invaluable guide throughout the world. What did they teach us? It is the message of universal brotherhood, tolerance and respect for all religions. That is the only way we can survive and make material and spiritual progress. India is a living embodiment of this multi-cultural pluralism. And the Babri Masjid demolition has to be viewed in this light. It was just not a stray and massive act of barbarism but a well-orchestrated attack upon India's soul.

There are people who seek to justify the demolition by citing similar acts perpetrated by Muslim rulers some centuries back! It would be too dangerous if we fall prey to such atavistic emotions. Besides there is a saying that “two wrongs can not make a right”.All our great spiritual and religious leaders emphasized the underpinnings of all religions that religions are different paths to attain God and the soul of all of them is one. And only the form varies.

In the beautiful word of Swami Vivekananda : “ Where man has learned that religions are but varied expressions of THE RELIGION which is Oneness, so that each may choose the path that suits him best”.
