Once considered as a noble profession, teaching profession does not have many takers in today’s world. The scenario is more alarming for private institutions. In the few years that I have worked as a teacher I have come across many colleagues who have confided that they are there only till they get a better paid job. Many serves as a teacher while trying their luck in different government jobs or other white collared jobs. One of the main reasons why people are reluctant to work as a teacher in a privately owned school is the heavy work load while being paid low. But from my personal experiences, I feel that if you look beyond the salary and workload, a few years of teaching experience can be quite beneficial to a teacher.

For instance teaching can certainly increase the knowledge about various subjects matter. Before taking class, a teacher is always expected to make a proper lesson plan. When making lesson plans a teacher often refers to other books and related articles or surf internet to have an updated knowledge. This enhances his/her knowledge about various matters. Making such lesson plans can also help a teacher in another way. For example, during my school days there were certain topics which I really found boring and did not pay proper attention when my teacher was explaining them. During examination I just learned them by heart to score higher marks than my friends. After becoming a teacher, as I had to teach my students I worked hard to understand them better by reading many articles and asking people who knew better. So today I have a better understanding on those topics.

I also feel that teaching helps in developing your personality. For instance, your presentation skill improves. Being a teacher every time you enter a class and teach something you gradually learn the technique of getting everyone’s attention and maintaining it.You also develop the confidence of speaking to a larger audience.

You also learn to be more patience and also how to deal with every kind of person. As we all know students can be of many types- some are smart, some are lazy, some are trouble maker, some are slow learner, and some are shy etc. As a teacher you have to interact with each of them and try to bring out the best from them. So gradually you inculcate the quality of patience.

You also become more organized in your work. With different works ranging from making lesson plans, taking classes, checking the home-works and class-works, making question papers etc you gradually learn to be more organized in your works.

But the best thing about being a teacher is that you get to smile often. Whether you have serious disposition toward life in general or is a happy-go- lucky- type personality, once you enter a class, interaction with the students can bring a smile on your face with the things they say or do. You also learn to appreciate every{jcomments on} small achievements of life. For instance, the little progress a student might make each day.

To conclude, teaching is not an easy job but it is never a monotonous one. Each new day seems like a new beginning which brings new joys and new challenges. The challenges are there only to improve your personality.
