For a Basic training program the candidate needs to have exceptional physical agility, knowledge or interest to learn electronics, good communication skills, team work for better managing skills, mathematical skills and carpentry. The chances of landing a well paid job are more with a Master's certification.

Apart from learning how to - identify different types of locks( i.e. digital, mechanical etc), fixing and opening locks, the students also learn about latest tools and equipments, and advanced technologies on various security systems. They also get to work with latest and advanced Locksmith tools to get good practice. Some institutions also provide a chance to learn Business Management techniques like how to setup start-up costs, advertising and inventory management etc. These are useful to candidates who want to establish their own Locksmith business. For new business aspirants, these institutes also offer training in management skills like training the staff, offering special equipment tools and the requirements of business. For techs there are websites, forums and discussion seminars etc. After course completion, some institutions insist on Apprenticeship for a certain period, before allowing to start a personal business. They believe in the value of a good practiced Locksmith, rather than a novice entering the market to provide service to clients without proper practical knowledge and practice. Previously in UK, proper training or apprenticeship was mandatory for Locksmith registration, but now this rule has been removed. However it is not prudent to enter a business without proper skills practice, and knowledge.

Slowly other countries are also starting to recognize the importance of this profession, and increasing the job opportunities in this profession. Due to this market, the options for job advancement, chances for new opportunities, self employment etc have increased. The ranges of pay are around 13000-40000 pounds per annum. In Indian rupees it is quite a huge amount. Getting a job in this market has become fairly easy, but advancement in the same company depends on the person's skills. Some formal training may be required to improve the skills of such people.Due to diverse lock systems there are many services which can be offered by a Locksmith, to both commercial and private clients. Profit mainly depends on the type of lock system, tools necessary, and the urgency of the task. The tasks of auto lock reentry, key cutting and replacement services are essential for a successful business. In emergency cases, like people getting locked out or losing security keys, etc quick action and fast thinking along with problem solving skills are necessary. These are some of the mundane but necessary and expensive services that a Locksmith has to offer.

There are many common misconceptions among many people that the profession of a Locksmith is cheap, unsuitable for educated people, unprofitable as a business, involves just making lock and keys etc. In reality it has been statistically observed that people intend to take Locksmith as a profession can earn well. Provided they get a degree, complete apprenticeship program and then get a job or set a business. Over time and with experience they can build a solid reputation, clientele, and earn good.
