Education Gyan

Hello People....

I was thinking to start an Education Series. In Which Each 'Selected Field', Members discuss about their education from admission procedure, Scholarships, Job Opportunity, Problems found during Their Education, So that our other Community member who want to Go for the same Study in same country and/or aboard might get help for our views, or we can suggest them what should be take care during getting admission and how good we can make others career more better.... the problems which we faced in past might not get affected to others...

Education Gyan Agenda :

1) Fluid Dynamics.

Currently one of ma frnd is doing PhD in Fluid dynamics. Not pure CFD but applications.

Before this he did BSc (with Mathematics) from MSU, MSc (with applied Mathematics) from MSU and second masters (with TechnoMathematics) from Finland.

2) Why should select that stream.....¿

If you want to do something with mathematics especially research. Good guidance and recommendations helped me reach up here.

3) What is scope after the study....¿

Current studies will fetch position as a researcher or lecturer. (This is purely employment perspective).

4) How he got an admission there....¿

He was working with my dissertation in Applied mathematics department in Tech. & eng. faculty in MSU, and his supervisor recommended him to go to Finland and pursue another masters (this wasted a lot of my precious time but he learnt a lot of thing academically and life otherwise).

I'll confess that the university and town Lappeenranta (where he live) are not so big. The department that he work for right now, has 'centre of excellence for CFD' so don’t care much about the size of the university is.

5) What about scholarships...¿

He had no scholarship for his masters’ studies.bt After six months of masters’ studies, the department agreed to pay some money just enough to survive.

”The PhD studies are funded.”

6) Earning with studies....

During masters, he worked part time as part-time teaching assistant. After finished masters’ studies, he worked as full time teaching assistant five months.

’As I mentioned above that the PhD studies are funded so don’t need to work for money.’

7) What types of problems facing currently with studies (eg.. interacting with people, language, study course, financial, personal)

Of course, he had some problems when he arrived there. First was financial but he found that part time teaching job fast enough to avoid spending his parent’s money.;)

Second was language. This is a common problem in European countries, especially if you are looking for part time job. he was spared from this because his work was academic.

When finished masters’ studies, though he had that teaching assistant, had to wait for long for being accepted as PhD student.

Well, currently don’t have any problems what-so-ever with work or life. Except that tomorrow morning have wake up and go to office... :))

8) Also, What other students of India should take care before selecting stream....

Of course, study well. Studying basic science is not a bad choice. I don’t think you need extra ordinary mark sheets to get admission to a BSc program for a start. So, there is not much care to be taken.

Flashback: ma frnd took three attempts to pass his HSC exam (2 for Math, 1 for Physics). Irony of this is that he got admission in BSc with Math as Major and Physics as minor.

9) suggestion: why should any student study that course ¿... and Why should not study this course!!!!¿

why should any student study ¿

If you’re interested in academic research. Also, academic jobs tend get more secure as you study more. ;)

Why should not study this course ¿

1. INTREST: If one is not interested in studying basic science, it’s very difficult to do any amount of justice to the degree. 2. TIME & EFFORT: It took 7 years to achieve goal of ma frnd’s life. So it asks a lot of persistence and patience. 3. MONEY: You might earn less than professionals like doctors or lawyers.

10) But i think... the same course might be available in Gujarat/India or Any other country like Australia/ US/UK, why selected finland......

His supervisor already knew a professor in Finland who helped with his life. Its not that planned to come to Finland, he had to make a choice whether to go to Finland or stay back in India.

’The one good thing about coming was that he did not have to pay university fees for my studies’

11) Also, is that course advisable/affordable to a Normal Middle Class Student !!! (This question might create controversies, but people this is just for information)

Education in Finland is free, so one need not pay any fees to university. The cost of accommodation obviously depends on where you live. The place where he live, about 300-320 Euros is approximate per month expense (living+food+misc.). Since, the place where he live is a small town, finding a part-time job out side university is almost impossible unless you know the local language very well.

12) The other thing... What is the admission procedure to get admission in your Institute starting from Application to Accommodation !!

Application procedure is easy, send in application with necessary documents and if they are good enough, one gets admission. University takes care of accommodation.

The course that he was about applied mathematics. In India one needs a BSc with mathematics with at least 2nd class. In Finland, you need four years of mathematics studies (BSc+ 1 year of master). This is due because in Europe all the Bachelors degrees are four years in length.

Comments plz ! :)

Cheers !!! ;)
