Body Mass Index

It is good if you are looking healthy but it is not always right that looking healthy means you are actually healthy as increase of fat in your body means you are going to suffer from lot of problems like diabetes, High blood pressure, cancer and many more.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the best way to keep check on yourself that whether you are actually healthy or not. BMI is a measurement tool which measures the fat in adult man and woman.

It is the ratio of weight (kg) of the body to the height (meter) of a person. It tells us that our weight is in right ratio to our height or not.

According to one survey it is said that if abdominal and lower limb obesity or metabolic syndrome are not kept under check that India will become the global Diabetes Capital till 2050. In India out of 3 every one person is suffering form high blood pressure and the data is increasing day by day.

Under these facts Health department issue a revised list of BMI chart which is as follows.

18 kg/meter - Under weight
18 kg/meter to 22.9 Kg/meter - Normal
23 Kg/meter to 24.9 Kg/meter – Overweight

More than 25 Kg/meter – Obesity

According to this new guide line if we calculate than we find that 15% to 20% Indians are fall in Overweight category.

Measurement of Waist

We can calculate abdominal weight with the help waist measurement. If your BMI is normal but the waist of your size is more than the set criteria than you also falls in the category of overweight (Fat people).

The waist size for man should be not more than 90 c.m. (35.6 Inches) and for woman it is set up to the 80 c.m (31.6 inches) more than that means you are overweight or a fat person.

Risk Factors

Being an overweight and obese there are some other risk factors also for which we have to take care. These are ;

  • High Blood Pressure
  • High LDL Cholesterol (Bad Cholesterol)
  • Low LDL Cholesterol (Good Cholesterol)
  • High Blood Glucose
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Cigarette Smoking.
  • Family History of premature Heart Diseases.

The people who comes under the category of Overweight or Obesity can suffer with the any two risk factors as discussed above. They are advised to control their weight and reduce it up to 7% surely.

Limitations of BMI

  1. It is not applicable on pregnant woman and feeding mothers.
  2. It is not applicable for athletes and for the people who have very strong physic.
  3. It is also not applicable to the weak and old persons as it can show that they are underweight.
