INDUSTRIAL SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS.
Introduction
Many of us work in industry and we should know about industrial accidents and safety. I am writing this to aware to many of my industrial friends.
"Live today to live tomorrow."-it is not only a proverb. It means one can not live tomorrow in comfort if he will die or injured today. Death may comes in various conditions. In our daily working life many hazards come as a cause of injury or death. We should bypass these hazards to safe ourselves. A good workman always try to work in safer conditions to gain more. Here are some points about the causes of accidents and how to escape from them.
Lack of safety precautions can
1) Increase the cost of production and life also.
2) Loose training and worktime.
3) Reduce training and output efficiency.
Types of safety precautions
Generally there are two types of safety.
- personal safety
- job and equipment safety.
Causes of accidents
Accident does not happen, they are caused and they are caused under the conditions:-
- Ignorance - It causes due to unknown about the hazards.
- Curiosity- It is the desire to find out 'what' and 'why'.
- Carelessness- It is "nothing will happen "mindness.
- Lack of proper tools and equipments- The proper tools and equipments must be used for job. It may damage the tools or many causes an accidents by using improper tools.
- Bad working conditions- Not proper conditions or environments for working safety. Proper light and ventilation must be kept.
- Laziness or monotony- First one is personal and second one is due to repeatation of job, diverts mind.
Precautions to be taken
1) Use of proper dress.
Worker must come to workshop or work place with tight pant,shirt and safety shoes. Loose dress may wind up with revolving machine parts and may cause an accidents.
- Use overal or appron where necessary
- Wrist watch or finger ring must not use in working time.
- Tie or muffler must be avoided in working time.
- Use goggles and helmate.
- Don't use slippery shoes. Avoid to walk in bare footed.
2) Work Area
- Working area and sorroundings must keep clean and free from all obstructions.
- Slippery substances or oil,greese must not on the gang way. The oily substances must be covered with sand or saw dust.
- After completion of job clean your working area.
- Materials should be kept in proper place.
3) Machines
- All moving parts i.e. gear, belt, pulley, chains etc must have safe gaurds.
- Never try to operate a machine unless you can stop it.
- Don't leave your machine in running condition.
- Don't lubricate the machine in running condition.
- Don't try to remove chips from running machine by hand. Use a wooden stich after the machine stop.
4) Defective Tools
- All defective tools may cause an accident. Try to avoid these tools.
- Mush-rommed headed chisel, spread out jaws of spanner should be avoided.
- Hammers with broken handle should be avoided . All the defective tools should be use after recondition properly.
5) Electricity & Fire
- Unauthorised person should not operate electrical equipments like switch etc. and a danger board must be on the switch board while men are working on the line.
- Everybody should be familier with the fire fighting equipments mainly fire extingwishers, sand buckets, fire hydrants, fire hases etc. Avoid throwing burning materials at any place. Hot materials should be covered with gaurds. Water should not be used on electrical equipments or fire.
Personal care needed
To avoid the accidents and be safe from the hazards ,the workmen should have the following personal qualities.
- Watch with full eyes ,be attentive at the time of work.
- Never disturb your friends at the time of working.
- Don't stand on the opposite side of chipping, hammering or grinding, unless there is a gaurd.
- Don't try to shortcut, use proper passage or gang way.
- Don't make practical jokes.
