India has come a long way since independence. We have completed 64years of independence and celebrating it with a great zeal and enthusiasm. And this is what showing us that yes India has grown up. These 64years are not just the years of independence but these are the years in which India has grown up into a vast economy. Saying, that we are fully developed will be a false statement because we are still a developing nation.

But still we ask from us that where India has grown up and in which field? We will now see that how India has come a long way since independence.

Starting from beginning, we all know that in 1950’s we were not having enough food to feed 400million people and were looking desperately for aid from other countries. But presently we are a good surplus nation and feeding over billions of people. And beyond this we are also exporting our food grains. This is the result of the Green Revolution. But hardly anyone thinks of it.

A decade ago we were desperately in need of foreign exchange and had to mortgage our gold reserves. Today our reserves are closed to trillion dollars and still rising. India today has a Gross Domestic Product of US $4.457 trillion. India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with an average annual GDP growth rate of 6.5%.

We all are aware of the recession which came two years before in the whole world and affected many countries of the world. But do you know that India was the only country which was least affected by the recession. We were also affected by the recession but not like other countries. The services like IT, Banking & Finance, Media & Entertainment and host of others, continue to grow at a breathtaking pace. Our country recovered very soon from it as compared to other nations.

India has developed many software and systems that are now supporting the world’s biggest companies. And this has made the world more dependent on India. For example- Epic web browser and many other.

These things would have been considered impossible in 1947 when India burdened with an enormous inferiority complex, looked to the west for everything, whether in Science & Technology or Engineering. But now the scene has changed. Today engineers, doctors, teacher and business men are in great demand in foreign and this is what showing the growing education level and literacy.

In 1947, India was known abroad for its poverty, snake charmers, fakirs lying on bed of iron nails, cows wandering in the city streets etc. It was considered an exotic land and nothing more. There was hardly any Indian in UK, Canada, and Australia. But today Indians constitute the highest income earning group in the United States.

India has still a long way to go in practically all fields. Millions of people live below the poverty line, literacy is still slow by western standards, and hundreds of villages hardly have any drinking water facility and health care is less than minimum. But that should not detract us from the success. There is hardly anything that India cannot indigenously build. A young generation will take all these for granted but it is only an older generation that has seen India cowering under western dominance that can appreciate the great changes that have come over the Indian society.

On the strength of what India has achieve in the last half of a century one can confidently assert that with the next quarter century India will be a force to reckon with and will be counted among the first three or four most powerful nations in the world. This is not only a dream and hope but something that will be seen as a reality. Then indeed can any Indian say with truth and pride “Mera Bharat Mahan”.
