'Manners make the man' is proverb. Good manners or shortly, manners are the established principles of decent conduct or behavior  in social life. They comprise decent words, gestures, movements, speech, courtesy, politeness, etc. They make a man a perfect human being or a perfect gentleman. An uneducated man as well as an educated man can acquire manners. They are free from the influences religious and political creeds. Man is a social being. He has to live in a society. He has to come in contact with the other people in his daily life. His behavior should be pleasing to them. Manners are learnt at home, at school, at college, at public gatherings, from friends and through books. He who has manners meets with success in life because everybody likes him and offers to help him. His manners recommend him to other people. They can win over even his enemies.

 

 

A man of manners speaks polite and refined words. He speaks in a gentle voice. He never shouts. He doesn't lose his temper. He is humble, yet dignified. He shows concern for other people's welfare more than for his own. He speaks to the point. He uses choice words to communicate his thoughts. He is always courteous to other people. He shows respect to others. He is never impolite to them. He does not interrupt the speech of other people in a conversation. He waits for his turn to speak. He never monopolizes the conversation. He gives chances to other participants in the conversation to give out their views. Even when he has to criticize other people's views or refuse their statements, he never uses harsh, loud and impolite words. he knows that shouting or abusing is not winning. He never loses his temper.

A boy, learning manners, should be polite, respectful and courteous to his classmates and teachers. He never discusses anything in a loud voice. He never sings or whistles before the elder or while walking along the street. He does not loudly laugh before the elders. He is courteous to the visitors to his house. Good manners make a man's personality graceful and charming. They win for him the affection, respect and good wishes of other people. His life is naturally quite happy and successful.

 

While speaking to other people, a man of good manners often uses the euphemistic words like, 'please', 'thanks' and 'sorry'. He does not criticize and ridicule other man's defects or religious faiths, or political faiths. He avoids heated discussions on political matters at social gatherings less they will create ill and bitter feelings.He shows a keen interest  in listening to other people's views. He does not sneeze or cough or blow his nose before other people. If he has to do so, he uses a handkerchief to cover his mouth or nose.

 

He is chivalrous to ladies, old people, sick people and children. He doesn't talk loudly when he is in a library lest it will disturb the people reading there. When he visits his friend, he doesn't pluck the flowers in his friends garden or spoil anything new or useful in his friends house. He never damages public property.He doesn't mind standing in the queue at a ration shop or at a theatre. He doesn't smoke before ladies and the elders. He doesn't boast of his merits, talents and achievements. He is never vain or proud . But he openly appreciates the other people's merits and achievements . He is free from envy and greed . He doesn't speak ill of other people behind their back.

 

All these qualities make him a lovable personality in the society.
