Saint Francis lived a long time ago. He was born in 1182 in Italy. He was a good man. People loved him. Birds and animals also loved him. Saint Francis called them his brothers and sisters. Here is a story about him.

One day saint Francis to a town. A cruel wolf lived in the forest near this town. It killed animals. It bit little children. People were afraid of the wolf. They told Saint Francis about their problem.

`Don’t do that,’ said his friends. `The wolf will kill you.’

`Let me go,’ aid Saint Francis, `I am not afraid.’ Saint Francis walked towards the forest. The wolf saw him and ran towards him. Its mouth was open, and its white teeth were very sharp.

Saint Francis put out his hands to the wolf. He said, `come here, brother wolf’.

The wolf closed its mouth and sat down at the feet of Saint Francis.

`Brother Wolf’, said saint Francis, `Do not kill animals. Do not hurt people. Do not be cruel.’

The wolf listened to Saint Francis silently.

`Brother Wolf, the people of the town will give you food,’ said Saint Francis. `Don’t bite their children. Do not kill their animals.’

The wolf lifted up its paw and put it into the hands of Saint Francis.

`Will you be good to the people?’ asked Saint Francis.

The wolf nodded its head.

`Come then, Brother Wolf,’ said Saint Francis, `let’s go into the town and tell the people.’

Saint Francis walked back to the town and the wolf walked behind him.

The people were surprised.

Saint Francis put his hand on the Wolf’s head and spoke to the people.

`Listen,’ he said. `Brother Wolf won’t hurt your children. It won’t you animals. It will be good. Will you give it food?’

`Yes,’ shouted the people.

The Wolf left the forest and came to live in the town. It was gentle and friendly. It played with children. The people were now happy.
