Some animals live on land. Some animals live in water. But there are some that can live both on land and in water. Such animals are called amphibians.

Frogs, for example, are amphibians. They live in wet places. Some frogs live on land near water. Some frogs live in water all the time. Some frogs live in trees. Some live in burrows under the ground.

A toad is one kind of frog. It was bumpy skin that is not as moist as the skin of other frogs.

A frog has a short round body. It has smooth, moist skin. It has a big head but no neck. It has big eyes on top of its head. It can see out of the water. It has not stuck its head above the water. Thus it can keep itself safe from its enemies.

A frog has four legs. Its back legs are big and strong. This makes the frog a good jumper. The front legs are smaller than the back legs. The frog rests its front feet on the ground when it is sitting. Sometimes it uses its front feet as hands. It uses them to push food in to mouth.

Frogs that live by ponds and streams have webbed feet. They use their feet for swimming in water. Tree frogs have sticky toes. They use their toes for climbing the trees. Frogs that live in burrows have pointed toes. They use their toes for digging burrows.

A frog doesn’t drink like we do. Its kin lets the water in. that is why all frogs live where they can get into water.

A frog is a clever hunter. It sits very still when it is hungry. Its sticky tongue zips out quickly when an insect gets close to it. Then this clever hu8nter grabs the insect for its dinner. A frog eats small animals like snails and worms.

A frog starts its life as a tadpole. It hatches from a jelly-like egg. The tadpole has no legs. It has a long tail. It has gills like a fish.

To swim in water, the tadpole moves its tail from side to side. It swims in water and looks for its food. It eats little plants called algae.

The tadpole’s back legs grow first. Then its front legs grow. As the les grow, the tail gets shorter. The lungs also begin to grow. Soon the tadpole begins to look like a frog. It jumps out of the water to live on land. But it always stays by the water.
