Hi Friends,

I would like to share with you some infomation about Geo stationary Satellites.   Let us see what is a Geo stationary Satellite?   A satellite which is put in  Geo stationary orbit around the earth is called a Geo stationary satellite.  The satellites in geo stationary orbit main tain same position with respect to some place on earth.  The height of geo stationary orbit is something around 36,000 kilometers from the surface of earth.   The orbit is almost parallel to the equator.   The satellite takes 24 hours to make one rotation around the earth.  That means the period to complete one revolution is equal to earth's revolution period.  So it looks as if it is stationary at a place.   In other words, if a satellite in a geostationary orbit is in a certain place above the earth, it will stay in that same spot above the earth. Its latitude stays at zero and its longitude remains constant.

These satellites are commonly used for communications like TV programs, Telecommunications, TV telecast etc.  and also can be used for Weather observation.   India has a number of geo stationary satellites in INSAT series like INSAT-1B, INSAT-3A, INSAT-3C  etc.

I hope this article is useful to all.
